Something Fishy by bunny dragon, rongo rongo, Gertrude Gardener

INSTRUCTIONS: Go fishing for something that is not fish.

Having been impressed at everyone's squirrel fishing prowess, I was inspired to go after another common urban pest: geese. When I mentioned this plan to several friends, everyone warned me about how dangerous geese could get. I was starting to think that I needed to bring along safety equipment, but decided that I could probably outrun a goose if absolutely necessary.

Surprisingly, geese turned out to be much more timid than anticipated, and I had to spend a long time coaxing them to take the bait. An excellent way to spend a sunny morning.

Bait

Bait

Bagels are great bait because they are reasonably tough and have a pre-built hole.

The quarry

The quarry

Dozens of geese hang out in this area. A cloud of down and feather detritus rises from the flock when they all get up and mosey to their feeding grounds.

Suspicious geese

Suspicious geese

The geese were willing to come take a look, but were very nervous about my fishing pole and line.

The first taker

The first taker

Pigeons are apparently more venturesome than geese when it comes to suspicious food sources. I was able to reel the bait in slowly, but didn't actually catch any pigeons.

Visitor from the north

The Canadian geese were next. They chased away the pigeons and took a peck at the bait.

Alpha goose

Finally, this goose saw that there was some food going on, and ran over to check it out.

I felt a tug

I felt a tug

He showed that bagel who was boss, and ripped it right off the line, after a brief struggle.

No roast goose tonight

No roast goose tonight

I didn't catch any geese, but it was a good morning's fishing.

A series of different birds attacks the bait, and one finally runs off with the bagel.

Nice. Oh, and Geese ARE dangerous. One bit me enough to draw blood just last Thursday. Oh, and one once broke my friend's arm with it's wing, which I'd always thought was an urban myth til then...

So...what were you doing when you got attacked by geese? Now I'm curious.

Trying to feed ducks. Turns out that jealous, greedy geese bite.
