INSTRUCTIONS: Propose a way that SF0.org can be improved.

Your proposition can then be debated in the "Comments" below, and it can be voted for.

The proposal with the most votes will be implemented. This is not subject to approval by the administrators of this site.

Concerning Retired Tasks:

Retired tasks encourage us players to complete new and different tasks, while also keeping the list of possible tasks to a manageable number. Unfortunately, many of the retired tasks are still exceptional ideas, and it's aggravating to be barred from completing them.

Un-retiring tasks is a simple activity for the creators, but it is only an improvised solution to our problem. Setting a countdown for disappearing tasks allows us to anticipate retirements, but doesn't resolve the recurring desire to complete tasks that are already retired. We will always want to complete retired tasks. Completing retired tasks for our own enjoyment outside of SFØ isn't satisfying, because we can't post them to the community.

Proposal:

"Stale, yes... but not spoiled"

Old (retired) tasks can still be signed up for and completed, but not for points. Points are only awarded for completions of "fresh" tasks. A standard time limit wouldn't be out of line, in my opinion -- perhaps 90 days.

this gets at things creatively that I wish I'd gotten at with my variation.

would we still get points from the votes cast on retired tasks?

yes! we still do now! that's what I keep trying to tell people. Man, I've heard people say "i'd vote for this if it wasn't retired" and all that stuff. Hell, afaik the system is smart enough now to apply your points/votes to your totals for the era in which the task was completed, even after task retirement and across Eras. I have witnessed this view change as players' old tasks get votes. Not to put too fine a point on it, I single handedly altered this view for Impossible Exchange only months ago by going back through some people's proofs (the votes view changed too, obviously).

i can't even say it.

You can do this… I was talking about this with YB at the campfire at doorhenge.
You just comment your completion if you are die hard on documentation.

I vote...

Explain me this conversation with YellowBear about how we can already do this?

And while you're at it, explain me also any secrets you know about YellowBear that would further my strategies against him.

No points including no points from votes? I've been working on the same task for a year and a half now (a fifteen point task, mind you), and I wouldn't mind getting a smattering of acknowledgement, when it finally gets posted.

I'm pro- no base points, but if you've put enough work into it- you deserve your votes, I believe.

This may all just be selfish and self-serving, though, because I'm a slow tasker.

VOTES ONLY!

I love the idea… but it
would make SFØ a straight popularity contest.

Are you afraid of a popularity contest, Spar?

I'm not.

Popularity contests make bad games. +1

I'd be afraid of discouraging new people, if all points came from votes.

But here you go, a vote because I like you. ;)

I'll admit, though, that I'd find a visible countdown to retirement more useful (and think it would encourage more people to complete the task).

Votes only will only hurt me, I'm only on the front page of players because I spamed SFZero with poorly done task completions!

hmmm.

I like the idea, and I certainly agree that task-retirement reform of some kind is a great use for this discussion forum task.

Personally, I'd rather see people retain their points (or at least votes) for tasks that they've signed up for before retirement. If it takes someone a year to do a task, chances are it's going to be very cool when it's done and well worth votes.

Allowing people to sign up for a task after retirement for no points or votes sounds like a very good idea. It sends a clear message to players that we ought to be doing fresh tasks, and few people would take on a point-less and retired task unless they had something epic in mind. Self selection would weed out lame retired-task submissions.

As others have pointed out, it's always possible to "submit proof" for a retired task as a comment. But, except for your friends and the obsessive feed readers, no one's going to see it, which would be sad.

did someone say "obsessive feed readers?" I sure thought I saw that somewhere...

okay, since the timeline/history thing appears to be underway via wiki power, can we just roll villain's votes together with mine and say: "people want something creative to happen with task retirement" ?

we can't just say that? okay okay ...

but still.

I'm voting for the statement, "people want something creative to happen with task retirement."

But, if that creative thing were the Villain's detailed proposal, that'd be okay too.

I fear a popularity contest.

Still, this is a good idea. I was very sad to see some tasks go the way of the do-do and much prefer they be like the coelacanth.

so once a freshly completed task becomes retired, are the points take away? it seems as if this might be the case

Points aren't taken away from players who completed a task that has since been retired. But no one can sign up for a retired task. If you sign up for a task, the task is becomes retired, and then you complete it, you still get points.
