Autostereogram by Prince Chaosti

September 4th, 2011 2:55 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create an autostereogram.
It had better not suck.

Tiny itty bitty bit of backstory: I was absolutely OBSESSED with 'magic eye' pictures when I was a kid.

The moment I saw this task I knew I had to do it.

I sat down and found a program that will translate pictures into sterograms, and researched how the pictures are composed (googled sterogram, really) and figured out that lighter scales become more pronounced/stand out more in the finished stereogram. I played around with a few pictures I had on my laptop to see how different colors/backgrounds/etc translated.

I wasn't really happy just picking a picture that made a decent 'gram and go with that. I wanted something special. I made a few attempts at altering my profile picture (StupidFox) but wasn't satisfied. Paint just isn't sophisticated enough. I had a sudden idea. Why don't I go through the Monster Manual? I have them all on my laptop...

I have to admit, some of those came out pretty cool-looking.

Still wasn't happy though.

I know! I'm totally missing my old WoW character, Beeframen. I can do a sketch of Beefy with his bear and cat forms! I even looked up all his old equipment for accuracy. I then realized that I can't draw, and I wanted this stereogram to be epic, not crappy.

Then it hit me. Really hard, in the face. PORTAL!

Because who doesn't love the companion cube?

The program I found makes pretty generic rainbow-y images, so I looked around for some other color pattens to use because, EPIC NOT CRAPPY. I found a stereogram with some interesting coloring and used the stereogram to make my companion cube stereogram. There was a moment where I thought the background stereogram would show up, but it managed not to.

I WILL make a crappy drawing of Beefy and make him a stereogram at some point. I'll update this task when I do, but for now, I am happy with my companion cube.

I had a ton of fun doing this task (even if trying to make supidfox a stereofox frustrated me to no end), and expect to make a ton of stereograms in the future.

Also as an afternote: I was going to do a 'gram of Secret Squirrel. I think I still shall.

I'm also relatively sure that my companion cube doesn't suck.

Finished product! It will never leave me. It has no legs.

Used this vortex 'gram as the base for the final Companion Cube 'gram. If you look, the 3-dimentional image doesn't seem to have an image, just a lot of layers of greyscale.

Found this picture (with a white background) on DeviantArt. Made the background black so as to not stand out in the finished product.

Angel

Angel

One of the pictures I used that was already on my laptop.

angel sterogram

angel sterogram

Resulting stereogram from the blue angel picture. The upraised picture seems to have shoved itself from the center of the image to the left side.

rainbow cupcake!.jpg

rainbow cupcake!.jpg

Picture of a rainbow cupcake from my 22nd birthday. I thought, hey, this may be interesting...

rainbow cupcake2.jpeg

Resulting 'gram of the cupcake. I thought it looked like...Hmm, a hand holding a fireball. I cast fireball!

Dragon Cave

Dragon Cave

Original image of the dragon cave (or maybe it's a city? We're going with cave because it's cavernous and has dragons) Isn't it so pretty?

Dragon cave inverted

Dragon cave inverted

Inverted image of the dragon cave.

Dragon cavern. I thought this one was especially beautiful

SF0 Inverted

I did a stereogram of the SF0 logo as well. Companion Cube's still better, sorry.

SF0 stereogram.jpeg

SF0 'gram. I found it a little hard to see for some reason.

Tried relatively hard

I couldn't get any of them to work. If you tell me it was an elaborate ruse to get me to put my nose up to my lcd, I will vote five.

It's only an elaborate ruse if it worked. Did you put your nose to your LCD? Perhaps you just lack faith.

Try saving a picture and making it as big as you can. That tended to help me.

Especially the savoir-faires and the laissez-faires are delightful.

I saw the SF0 one and the cube one. The others are still eluding me, but this is so cool! I want to make my own now :-)

Uh-oh. Pre- "SFZero's two-week vacation" images still show up, though? Is this only true on one particular computer / browser / internet connection?
