Suggestions Box by Rin Brooker

April 4th, 2009 11:18 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Take a large box and label it 'Suggestions'.

Decorate it if you want.

Take it with you and get suggestions from strangers.

The suggestions can be about anything.

Day 1.
I started the suggestion box task today. It seems like such a good idea that this won't only be a task for me, it'll possibly change the way I live my life if I find wisdom in the notes of others. So, having this intention I decorated an old box from Japan with some red duct tape and went to the store. there I got some employees, girl scout leaders, and a girl who I've seen at school but never talked to before to give me suggestions.

Day 2.
I had my birthday party and stayed home all day. No strangers showed up.

Day 3.
Normal day, but I didn't get any suggestions. Drat.

Day 4.
I took the box to school with me and got suggestions from random students. Then Jon Coyne found out what I was doing and tried to tear my box apart with his teeth.

Day 5.
I took the box to school again today. I left it in my art class and when I came back there was a crowd around it. "is this crowd gathering around my box or is my box just i the middle of the crowd?" I asked. "This is your box?" they asked. they had been putting in suggestions for the class thinking it was the teacher's box. Very funny.

Day 6.
after what happened yesterday I experimented with leaving my box in other places. I left it alone in the bandroom today and when I came back I spied Pachi writing me a suggestion.

Day 7. I'ts been one week. Today I didn't go anywhere. I shuold go more places. Suggestion in the box for myself. I lost one of my pens inside the box today, that's what i get for not taping the sides.

Day 8.
I took my box along to the store again. The workers are friendly there. I had less luck at Walmart.

Day 9. Back to school with the box, people seem to like making suggestions more when I'm not around. i left it in my english class alone for 3 minutes and when I came back it was acrossed the room.

Day 10. I lost my box... I hope I don't have to do this task over, I'm so worried.... I'ts probably in the art room.

Day 11. YES! it was in the art room! after school I took the box with me to go get a haircut and some of the other patrons enjoyed giving their two cents.

Day 12. I took the box to sears with me and left it in the breakroom for a couple of hours. It's starting to look pretty ratty and it has a hole in it.

Day 13. Today I took the box with me while shopping for a prom dress.

Day 14. I opened the box today. I was surprised that I got so many, 111. There were many suggestions telling me to live my life to the fullest but I got some really good ones too, and then 7 that just plain sucked.

Wow, 111 must be the record for the task! I tried this once and got discouraged after only two days in three different places.
The drive is strong in you.

For a book on the human brain, I'd suggest anything by Oliver Sacks. He writes about various neurological disorders in a very easy-to-read way, and most of the case studies are downright fascinating.

Good for you for actually taking the suggestions to heart.

This is a great task, and your completion of it has totally inspired me...

Excellent that you carried around to so many places, and got a wide variety of suggestions.

You didn't mention my comment...
It said "You'll never be as good as Lincoln."
