Player Photograph by Bvt. Major Misanthropology

July 3rd, 2012 9:24 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: The first task reads: "Take a picture of yourself. " This is the only time a sous rature gesture will be made, so let us remind you: you may be your character, but your character need not be you.

One's player photograph is a choice of who one wants to be within the community. So I asked myself, who is Major Misanthropology? The Major is anonymous, but not androgynous. She is individual, a bit old-fashioned, paranoid, and occasionally over-the-top. So, with these things in mind, and the help of my partner in crime, The Crafter, I set out to design my SF0 image.

After consideration I decided two things would be my visual SF0 signature. First, headwear befitting my personality, and second, a truly intent shade of red lipstick. In order to indulge my paranoia, I quickly decided the headwear in question needed to have a veil obscuring most of my face but, naturally, leaving my lipstick on display.

This velvet covered head band with a net veil, velvet ribbons, and a feathered foof on top was a cheap Goodwill find that had seen better days. But it appealed to my old-fashioned side and The Crafter and I both believed that with a little TLC, she could really be something again.

Our first step was to deconstruct the entire the piece. A process that was less painful than either of us had expected. The netting for the old veil was falling apart and wasn't opaque enough for my intended purpose anyway, so it was done away with, but the rest of the piece was salvageable.

Second, we made the new veil. The Crafter is truly lives up to the name and just happened to have some wonderful burn-out velvet up to the task (pun absolutely intended).

We had some missteps long the way, like when the Crafter sewed her finger to the project, but it turned out rather well in the end.

Third was the reattachment of the velvet detail ribbons and the feathered foof. This process lead to the creation of new musical composition entitled "The Trouble with Foof Is (It Can Tangle Up Your Thread)".

The veil needed weight, so we added some red edging that would pull the veil down and decorated it with the salvaged velvet and rhinestone bows and some spider sequins.

The final touch, a tube of "Drumbeat Red" lipstick. I am fond of symbols, and this is a drumbeat all my own.

Thank you for sharing your manifesto with us. It's a great piece of writing and I'm sure not to be the only one to recognize myself in what you've written.
