Create Art "Under the Influence" by sami
January 11th, 2010 11:09 PMThis is the last thing I drew under the influence of Salvia:

I definitely wanted to go to space again for this praxis, and Salvia is my rocket ship. Also, I'm weird and haven't smoked anything else (not even pointy leaf).
Of course, it's not always easy to be productive on salvia. Gardening, for example, can be quite hard for some folks.

This might be because Salvia causes some or all of the following in most people: hallucinations, hysteria, hugging, paranoia, heaven, happiness, depersonalization, terror.
I only experience the ones that start with an "H". Therefore, I personally adore the plant even though most of my friends swear they'll never touch it again in their lives.
Luckily, I received a shoebox of dried magic leaves.

I don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Since I recently started taking bupropion (Wellbutrin) I decided to do a little research about drug interactions. My pink happy pill makes alcohol work better. I know this from experience. It also makes me jerk involuntarily and fiddle with my hands and face like a meth addict.
This guy took salvia on bupropion and escitalopram (Lexapro). He describes an unusually long and intense experience - magic mint typically lasts 1 hour (including the after effects) but he was high for 3. I'm down for that. But he's also taking 3 times as much bupropion as me. We'll see.
Let's look at the science!
Bupropion is a dopamine and noepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. It makes sense why it boosts the effects of alcohol (dopamine), and makes me twitchy (noepinephrine, which is like adrenaline).
Here is a science-y picture!

Salvia is a Highly Efficacious κ-Opioid Receptor Agonist so that's why it turns me into the Queen of Ladybug Land. I don't see it interacting with my starting dose of bupropion except that I might perceive my existing side-affects a little bit differently or more intensely.
I decided that for comparison I would complete half the painting completely sober.

I decided on making a self portrait with a palette knife. I knew I would probably destroy a paintbrush.

This is my first bong that I have allll to myself. I bought it today! I really wanted to buy the one shaped like a dragon, but it cost $300.

Here I go...

I ran into the layer people, who are all over the place in infinite, vertical repetitions. They are usually comprised of visual parts from my surroundings, but that doesn't mean I know where the hell I am. Eventually through my side to side rolling, I found the "real layer" and began to smush paint onto the paper with my fingers.

For a more detailed description of my trip, read my blog.
The finished painting:

orange sharpie and some salvia

I remember drawing this extremely slowly since the feeling of the pen dragging across the paper was intoxicating. Lion, snake, butterfly, toad - melting into water.
gardening under the influence

it's not always easy to be productive. especially when you go to the seventh dimension.

SCIENCE! bringing it back. way to win, sami!
(also that is one pretty painting. damn fine tasking!!)
I didn't know that salvia exists! I like science a whole lot. That's a pretty picture.
Doing the painting half/half was a great idea. The contrast in styles makes the whole thing more interesting.
Salvia is amazing stuff, and I am thoroughly annoyed that my state has banned it. (It's a very minor crime, though; you get a ticket and have to pay at least twenty-five dollars. And there's an exception for using it in landscaping.)
