Portsmouth Sinfonia Revial by Curiou Sir, Darkaardvark, help im a bear, JJason Recognition, teucer

May 18th, 2008 10:02 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Form a band or orchestra for which the only membership requirement is that performers must never have played their chosen instrument before joining the group. Stage a public performance. Audio documentation is required.

Testimony for the MN0 Sinfonia Revival!

"I don't think we scared any small children!"
"Not the worst thing I've ever heard!"
"Some of the tunes were recognizable!"

Instruments: Recorder, French Horn, Xaphoon, Accordion, Ocarina, Jaw Harp

So, five fine fellows met one fine afternoon with the goal of making horrible music. The original plan was to hand out sheet music of various jazz standards (hey, some of us could read music), play around with the instruments for awhile, and then record something akin to "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", or maybe "So What". Um. We quickly realized just how impossible that was going to be, and settled for some free improvisation. An improvement? Listen for yourself and be the judge.

Some comments from the performers:

Dok H: Personally I find the parts where we were all improvising at once and creating a random cacophony to be less painful than the parts where somebody attempts to play a specific tune and fails miserably. Also while attempting anything more complex was clearly a mistake, we were able to play a bad-but-clearly-recognizable version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" at one point. (This is undocumented due to technical difficulties; that's probably for the best.)

hiab: Wow. What a delightful time. Music is so easy when you don't care whether or not you hit the notes! I was happy because the last time I tried to play a brass instrument, nothing at all happened. And this time I was even able to change the pitch. Intentionally!

Darkaardvark: Learning some new instruments went better than others. I could produce tones (I wouldn't call them notes) on the xaphoon, while the jaw harp simply ended up hitting my teeth. I am amazed, as always, that people managed to pass by such a cacophony without even a glance. You can see in the video of the final performance how hard they try to not look.

hiab: Oh, whatever, DA. Your xaphoon rickroll was totally fab

And now a moment of silence.
I dedicate this praxis to the memory of a particularly lovely rendition of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" that we performed on accordion, recorder, and xaphoon, apparently lost forever in the mists of cyberspace.

Yeah, that's how we feel too.

The xaphoon

Note the several sets of passers-by who studiously ignore us. Impressive.

And why are there only four of you in the final video?

(I love the Dok's lab coat)

Because most of the time, Curiou wasn't playing anything. Including in that video. And due to a typo I was unable to record audio, so the one recording of Curiou on the accordion is missing (among others, such as the painfully-recognizable performance of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and the xaphoon rickroll.)

And yes - we are in fact quite terrible. We're so terrible there's an entire instrument involved that nobody could figure out how to make much sound with until several days after the Sinfonia.

Nothing beats the feeling of seeing a task you've dreamed up completed in style. (Well, okay - actually several things in life do beat it. But it's up there. High up there.) Thanks, guys.

And, I note the filename of your final performance has some rather familiar digits in it. Secretly synchronized tasking? Well played, sirs, and congratulations at beating us to the praxis.

And, why didn't we think of When the Lion Sleeps Tonight? That would have been a fine choice. Ah well. Next time.

I'm sad that there's no recording of our version of the Lion Sleeps Tonight. Honestly, it was one of the best things we did. Of course, that's not saying much.

And no, not a coincidence.

Help I'm a Bear seems to have talent. You should go on with playing the xaphoon. The other's should probably not...
Great tasking!

help im a bear is scary sometimes.

About a year and a half ago I attempted to make a lap dulcimer out of cardboard. It was very, very, shitty. The frets (small nails glued to the soundboard) were spaced perfectly for it to be in tune, but playing a note required pushing down with enough force that the whole instrument, being quite flimsy, deformed and went out of tune. It was literally impossible to play that thing correctly.

help started messing with it and got actually good music out of it. I still don't know how.

man, that dulcimer was fun.

you could make some crazy sounds with it.

I just voted for this now. I wanted to hold off until I had a chance to listen to it. It is some fine stuff.

My cat hates the xaphoon, but that doesn't mean much, he has poor taste in music.

My apologies for making promises and not showing up, fellows- it was my birthday the day before and I'd worn myself out entirely.

That is, indeed, a fine excuse. Birthdays will do that to a person, if celebrated right.
