Object Annotation by Dela Dejavoo

March 18th, 2008 7:27 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Pick a local public object that you enjoy and leave a note on it describing your feelings in great detail.

When I first decided to do this task I had in mind that I would write a love letter to one of the beautiful objects I encounter regularly, one of those buildings or sculptures or storefront displays that tend to brighten my day a bit when I see them. But then I got to thinking about how the pretty objects always get all the attention and maybe I should write to an object that, though not necessarily inspirational or poetry-inducing, was exceptional in its solid reliability and functionality for me on a daily basis. Beyond that, I wanted an object that tended to not just be under-appreciated because of its plainness but also tended to get a lot of negative energy thrown at it and thus really needed a nice pick-me-up in form of an adoring letter.
It became obvious my letter was going to be written for an object of the CTA.
I ended up writing two letters, one to the Division Bus Westbound which I take to work every morning, and one to the Bus Stop Shelter at Pulaski and Division where I wait for the bus home each day.
I found it especially important that I write these letters this week as the weather is warming and any day now I will start riding my bike to work and not be in contact with either object until next winter.

The text is a bit difficult to read in the pics. I wrote out the the text of the first letter in the description of the photo to make it easier.

Note to Bus Shelter

Dear Pulaski/ Division Eastbound Bus Shelter, For four months now I have used the service of your fine shelter to keep the sleet and snow off from me. Boy, there's been a lot this year, eh? As spring is quickly approaching and I will no longer be using your shelter and instead riding my bike to and from work, I wanted to write a letter of appreciation before our time comes to an end. You really have been great. Really. And I know I'm not the only one who thinks so. I can think back to so many days this winter when your services were so desired by so many people that a whole horde of us were crammed in together, shivering and swearing under our breath, beneath your sturdy roof. I know you haven't always gotten the appreciation you deserve. I remember all to well that unfortunate day when a group of us stood inside you, falsely thinking we were invulnerable to the elements within your three-walled structure, only to our illusions shattered when a large truck sped by and covered us all head to toe in slush. For days after that no one would go near you. I remember the following day, as I approached you, being warned by a fellow bus stop dweller that using the shelter was "a bad idea" because of the slush incident. But our trust in you soon returned. And I don't think anyone could disagree with me that, given the walls you have to work with, you've done a great job of keeping us as snow/sleet/rain free as possible. So thank you, Bus Shelter. Have a wonderful summer! I'll be seeing you in November or December. xxoo, Dela

It was very thoughtful of you to thank utilitarian objects for their utility.

This letter is especially touching. Thanks for reminding me that it's okay to take CTA sometimes.

I'm glad you're back on your bike, though!

It's always OK to take the CTA!

Pros of biking: More fun, good exercise, free, can smirk at drivers stuck in traffic

Cons of biking: Might get killed by large moving vehicle, can be unpleasant in inclement weather, crappily paved Chicago streets

Pros of taking CTA: Can read books on the way to things, easy to overhear bizarre conversations

Cons of taking CTA: Can really screw you over when the bus/train is late/delayed/too crowded, potential of being felt up by creeps who think they can get away with it due to excessive crowding
