A Strange Kind of Love by Duck Monster

Express your love for something unconventional in a conventional way

Today, I have had my heart broken. I have shared an unconventional but sincere token of my love, and it has been rejected. Let me tell you the story...

So, I know we all love ducks--at least, those of us with souls--but I'm the duckmonster. I love ducks so much! They walk funny and they always look happy and they make cute noises. And their babies! How fuzzy! How could anyone not think these are wonderful animals? They are the penguins of the ... uh, rest of the world!

And so, in their honor, I set out to do this task. I bought a $.99 loaf of bread and used my heart cookie cutters to make "valentines" that I was sure the ducks would enjoy. And then Mudlock and I set out to a nearby duck pond. (Which is more of a storm drain, but ducks, geese, and herons hang out there.)

When we got there, we were sad to see a lack of ducks. I was afraid I would not have the opportunity to show my affection to these wonderful creatures. ... But, as we walked down the path and around the pond, we were pleased to find ducks sitting in the water at the far end.

I walked out, onto an outcrop of the land, and began to fling my tokens of affection toward my aquatic friends. And, for a time, they seemed somewhat interested, perhaps, in what I was doing. But they never approached. They never even poked at the lovely bread hearts I'd made for them, let alone eat one.

I threw all of the hearts I had made, from the entire loaf of bread, and not a single duck ate one.

I have been soundly rejected. The ducks do not return my affection and did not appreciate my gift. This makes me very sad.

There were so many hearts! So, so many!

We got to the storm drain and didn't see any ducks...

It's all right to feed ducks here!

She has been throwing hearts made of bread into the water for a while, now, and nobody's eating them. But they're pretty.

The valentines float, sadly, not being eaten.

The ducks just kind of hang out, not coming over to be loved by the duckmonster.

The ducks must know the hearts are there! They're so close! They can see them being thrown!

All these ducks, all ignoring duckmonster's tokens of love.

This duck seems to be considering.... but he ultimately decides that, no, he does not want to validate the love of the duckmonster.

The ducks seem to be investigating the bread, but we stood there for a very long time, and they never even pecked at it. So sad.

Maybe ducks prefer multi-grain bread.

How sweet!

I'm sure the ducks didn't mean to reject you - they were just full up is all...

Aww, Bex! I didn't mean to bring up bad memories...

I'll try showing up earlier in the day, with white and multi-grain bread, and see which the ducks like better, next time. (If they're talking to me by then.)

please don't be sad! this was a lovely thing to do, and i feel sure your hearts got gobbled up eventually. perhaps the ducks were just shy (and would that make them all the more endearing, really)?

Bread has no nutritional value for ducks. It's a human food. Rather, it fills them up so that they don't feel the need to forage for healthier food such as protein filled bugs and critters. But maybe your ducks are health conscious, that's why they didn't take your bread.

What if you brought little molds of birdseed? They might like that.

Ducks can be fickle. Maybe they were overwhelmed. Or maybe they are needy ducks who can't share the heart(s) of one Duckmonster with any other duck. Either way, I bet some other animals had a wonderful feast.
