Mihi by Electra Fairford

January 1st, 2010 12:10 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: In Maori culture, when you formally introduce yourself in a meeting house it is called a "Mihi". You tell people your canoe, tribe, sub-tribe and family, but you ALSO identify specific geological features to which you "belong". For example, "your" lake, mountain, river, forest etc.

Chose at least three geographical features that you consider "yours". Document them.

My canoe: Kostya, a 15" inspiron box running windows 7, firefox and pidgin

I have recently changed tribes, moving from the snowy, hack-culture, small-school-culture, interdisciplinary world-embedded-in-a-deghosted-steel-town tribe of CMU to the city on a hill, new age, protest culture, huge-school-with-Nobel-laureates tribe of Cal. Living between two tribes, my subtribe, family and geological features are split.

My sub-tribe is in my new tribe, a very small sub-tribe in the vastness that is Cal, but an interesting one.

My family is from my old tribe. The Chrzan group and 192.168.1.10 (Hal) are the families I have joined in my new tribe.

To place my geological features, you may wish to use this map, beginning in the mid-Focus on Real Life and moving gradually Intellectuals.

I have a mountain in the facebook range. Last year I was the benevolent dictator of ITR Games, a game best described as the illicit lovechild of Mafia and Tag, and this mountain is where I went to declare events. It is not only mine, as many people in my family also use it, and I have since mostly retired, but it is good to go back, climb to the top, and yell "Games January 9! Be Happy!" at the top of my lungs before visiting CMU.

Nearby in the plains of LJ I have a river: my river, but again shared with many people in my family. It is one of the places I go to think, but more to gather with friends and trade the non-extraordinary details of our days.

Moving a ways Focus on Web, we find my cliff on an unmarked island in the Sea of Culture, that of ffnet and fpnet. It is a place to shout from, and provides the occasional amazing view, but is less mine than it once was, and somewhat lonely.

Sailing Intellectuals-Focus on Web, I belong to a pebbly beach on the rocky Freenode island of the IRC Isles, again a place where family gathers, along with travelers from other IRC Isles, traders from the Sea of Memes, and raiders from the Ocean of Subculture as far Practicals as 4chan.

Just to the Focus on Real Life of the IRC Isles, I have a tree on an island in the Wikipedia Project, and on a nearby island another tree. Both are projects I have tended for many hours with my family, carefully watering and pruning to attain a more perfect shape.

Off the map to the Intellectuals, I have a little patch of jungle in the uncharted subcontinent of scientific literature where I tried to grow a cure for cancer; the effort has been taken up by others but this piece is still my garden.

I like the way you organize the information on this.
I think I'll take a stab at this task soon.
