Make it Soft by Flybug

November 26th, 2010 2:55 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Make something soft.

When I saw this task I knew I wanted to make myself a stuffed animal. I had no idea what kind I wanted to make, so I went on a hunt for patterns. I have very limited stuffed animal making experience, so it needed to be something simple. So I Googled 'simple stuffed animal patterns' and found this pattern for a giraffe.

It looked simple enough, so I printed it out, bought my supplies and got to work. After about 6 hours work spread over two days I have a nameless giraffe.

Check out the proof pictures to see more angles and find out why it took me so long.

And if you can think of a good name for him, let me know in the comments.

I went to the local copy place to get the pieces blown up, only to find out they don't take debit cards for less than $5. So I went home to get my checkbook. When I asked the clerk if I could borrow her pen, she gave me the copy for free.

Felt!

Felt!

Gray for the body, tie-dye for the spots, black for the mane and tail.

I got my body pieces all cut out and spread them out for a picture.

Spots.

Spots.

And here are the body pieces with the spots laid out. I used the embroidery floss to attach them.

Spots again!

Spots again!

Here you can see some of the spots after I sewed them on with the button hole stitch. The button hole stitch takes forever. I didn't know this when I started the project. It took me most of Kung Fu Panda and three hour long tv shows to sew on 14 spots.

Deflated body.

And here's the body all ready to be stuffed. It took me longer than it should have to get this sewn together. The directions weren't quite clear on a few things, so I had to redo a few seams after I did them wrong the first time. Then I couldn't figure out how to turn the belly to sew it on the machine so I had to do that part by hand, which added some significant time.

Done!

Done!

But finally I have a finished giraffe.

Yay for the simple pleasures! Giraffes have such a wonderful long neck to cuddle along!
