Keep Your Eyes Peeled by Charlie Fish

December 27th, 2007 5:28 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Install a surveillance system that monitors something of personal or political interest to you.

I installed myself on the balcony of the pub at the top of Victoria Station in London, and I people-watched. Meanwhile, my camera was on surveillance duty - it captured half an hour of footage while I sat there.

I reviewed the surveillance footage as soon as I got home, looking for anything interesting that got recorded. Normally I love people-watching, and a railway station is a great place to do it, but at first glance there was a big fat disappointing nothing of interest.

I watched the whole thing through again, taking some snapshots of stuff that got my attention (see below), but I still felt underwhelmed. I thought to myself - what's the best thing about people-watching at a train station?

THE HUGS!

So I watched the recording one more time, keeping a hawk-eye out for hugs. Fifteen minutes later I was still waiting.

But then - victory. In the foreground, the ponytailed lady in a white coat hugs her friends before they go their seperate ways. Bless her!

I've sped up the footage below so you can watch the whole thing in three and a half minutes, and I've put some pretty music on top for atmosphere. I think it's quite relaxing to watch.

I wasn't the only one watching...

This dog caught my interest.

These two kids were playing around for about ten minutes, running back and forth. Very sweet.

There are no bins (trash cans) in Victoria Station, so there's a dude that goes around picking up junk.

This man was running, and he scared away the pigeon that you can just about see to his right.

This guy drove onto the platforms with a train behind him, and then...

...came back without it.

Yay! At last! HUGS!

As interesting as the people are in fast motion, I kept watching the shadows running and playing on the ceiling. Like wraiths playing hide 'n' go seek.

How I loathe Victoria Station, I have been delayed there so many times.

Very nice completion though and I do love a good bit of people-watching.

It would probably make a v good music video to one of GY0 Ben's songs, see the Praxis.

I liked the little dance of the boy in a red sweater at 0:14. And the flowers received and smelled at 2:21. And the guy eating beef jerky near the easel from 2:31 to 2:47. Lovely.

Wow god I just love, love, love this task.

I have watched that video about 4 times now.

I love watching the paths people take.

Some walk up to the platform and then away or they go to look at Burger King. Many people make a bee-line between the underground station and the shopping centre.

Having a good knowlege of the station helps as you know ehre people are going.

This was so relaxing and I completely just kind of zoned out everything else. There were thoughts that I had while watching, but I've forgotten them now.
