Journey to the End of the Night: San Francisco Halloween 2011 by Continental Op

October 30th, 2011 2:00 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: The city spreads out before you. Rushing from point to point, lit by the slow strobe of fluorescent buses and dark streets. Stumbling into situations for a stranger's signature. Fleeing unknown pursuers, breathing hard, admiring the landscape and the multitude of worlds hidden in it.

For one night, drop your relations, your work and leisure activities, and all your usual motives for movement and action, and let yourself be drawn by the attractions of the chase and the encounters you find there.

How did you survive for as long as you did? Was your chasing technique irresistible? What's the story you were already telling even before it was over? Do you think that's going to heal? Tell us.

This was my third Halloween Journey to the End of the Night, and there were two big changes this year: the ability to visit the checkpoints in any order, and the optional resurrection checkpoint. My cohort and I chose a route that relied heavily on public transportation, but we were unfortunately tagged on the way to our third checkpoint. Thankfully, it was just a few blocks from the resurrection point, so we hoofed it over there, took part in the challenges, and became runners again. The scariest part was making it from Chinatown to Nob Hill. Chasers were everywhere, and at one point we were forced to duck in to a dead-end alley and pretend to be digging through someone's garbage while a large herd of them walked past. Our fatal mistake came when we missed our stop on Muni and had to get off one stop further and back-track to the safe zone. One block from the safety of Fort Mason, we were spotted by two chasers. I ran faster than I'd ever run in my life, but he got me in the end.
