Fruit Invasion by Happy McDeath, Togashi Ni, Dela Dejavoo

September 8th, 2010 8:27 AM / Location: 41.974167,-87.68178

INSTRUCTIONS: Purchase/aquire many (a pound or two) small fruits (I've found kumquats to be very appropriate) which will not easily be squished. Slip them into strangers' pockets, tie them by threads from trees, or in some other manner help fruit invade the city.

In order to honor the labor of fruit, and all it does for us, several SF0-ers decided to help fruit invade the city of Chicago. Since fruit normally grows on land, and has already done a decidedly good job of "invading" there, Dela Dejavoo, Happy McDeath, and Togashi Ni decided to help fruit invade via water and air. With the added help of Amby D, who selflessly volunteered to be left off the task as it only allows for 3 collaborators, we set out on Labor Day to begin the fruit invasion. Below is the fruits of our labor..

First, Dela and Amby built our naval forces. After making sure the boat floated (by testing it in the toilet), they set to work!

You need a lot of boats for an invasion.

Dela scouted out a wonderful park with access to the Chicago river, and a clear enough space for air launches. We all quickly went to work, beginning with the naval forces. Soon, the fruit was ready!

We took a video of our fruity boats. It looks a little discouraging, but after the camera stopped rolling, the boats actually took to the water, though there were casualties after encounters with vicious enemy ducks. Curses!!

Now that our naval invasion was underway, we decided it was time to send them into the skies. We took out our supplies of helium, balloons, and ribbon, and began the air invasion.

Our initial launch of a few grapes went very well. The windy city lived up to its nickname, and our little grapes were on their way.

Emboldened by this success, we decided to try something a little heavier! We created a harness for a plum, and filled balloons till we established some lift.

There must have been some enemies of the fruit around, because the plum was shot down, and had to be recovered.

On our second launch of the plum, it looked like it may very well take flight, but again some evil foe of the fruit caused it to take cover in some nearby trees

Well, I guess we should stick to lighter fruit. We changed locations to avoid any further problems, and once again set forth to help fruit take to the skies. We used more grapes, and recruited blueberry, strawberry, and blackberry soldiers.

With everyone's help, our fruit was soon ready for the final launch.

We stood back, and let the wind blast them off. Some nearby kids were excited about the balloons, and ended up chasing after them during the launch. Luckily the fruit was too fast, and yearned for the skies.

i want to love this so much! the ideas are so great and the visuals are wonderful. but littering makes me so sad, and the balloons and balloon strings are terrible in the environment and water supply.

love/sadness.

The grapes in the boats were particularly cute.
