Ble Mae'r Gymraeg! by Adam
April 11th, 2008 3:11 PM
I am sure many people are aware of my love for the Welsh language so I wrote this task hoping it would be accepted and completed. I orignally completed this task in the name of Level Zero but since it got accepted I thought I would submit it. Is that against the rules? Hope not.
The Welsh Language Act requires all signs in Wales to feature both English and Welsh and a large campaign has been mounted called "Ble Mae'r Gymraeg" which is Where is the Welsh? It sticks posters on signs which do not comply with the act. A recent campaign has been against Tesco and other supermarkets.
I printed off 14 posters and then set out on my trusty bike Gorbachev to campaign for Welsh language recognition. It just so happens I live about 250 miles from the Welsh border and myself and my Welsh science teacher from high school, Mr Getvolsden are the only people I know here who speak Welsh. Never mind.
I targeted signs in my local area and here are some photos to indulge your eyes.

The language kind of picked me up. I went to Wales 4 years ago, fell in love, bought a copy of "Teach Yourself Welsh" and with the help of some very good Welsh friends voila.

Nearly a three weeks after orignally completing this task about 50% of the signs are still up. Very rain-worn but still there. The road sign used in the main praxis has since been replaced (not by a Welsh-language version though).

It seems relevant, somehow.
How'd you pick up the language? I caught myself trying to 'read through' the signs you posted, but I suppose it's a good tactic to put them in places people will notice.
