Kamikaze by Jason 7au, Plain Kate

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a wind-powered device (such as a pinwheel or a kite) and put it in a windy public place.

Just about done
Kate:
Jason and I both liked the idea of a kite. Inspired by found object art, I started rummaging around his apartment looking for possible materials. My Southwest Airlines ticket holder was perfect. I neatly tore off a few strips to create two roses for the tail (appropriate as I'm visiting from the City of Roses) and then started folding the remaining ticket holder into a kite shape. Jason handed me tape and I found some large staple like thing to make a hole for the tail. I had wanted it to be faux origami, but ended up using one piece of tape. Following his lead, we headed to the park, eyes peeled for string and other possible useful items. It's amazing how having a simple task transforms a walk. Both of us looking down, alert and watchful. String was found, rubber bands, (we picked up litter just like Girl Scouts!) and some small twigs. Jason taped them to the back of the kite and tied the rubber band chain at the center of it's cross. It danced quite prettily as we walked around Golden Gate park trying to find a wind tunnel for our creation to fly. City wind is fickle! Just as there was a gust enough for it to hover above my hand and Jason would get the camera, the wind would disappear. We went over to the intersection of Fulton and Park Presidio, hoping the traffic's grimy gusts would lift off the SWA kite, to no avail. After traipsing and dancing and bouncing the kite on the rubber band lead, we happily left her in a tree on John F. Kennedy Dr. near the de Young, like a cloughtie in a gael.

Jason:
What a fun trek into the park. I had suggested we could get some string from the hardware store a couple blocks from my apartment, but Kate was adamant that we find everything along the way. The only thing from home I brought was tape. Once we got the kite assembled, I was somewhat disappointed that it didn't fly so well, but I knew that in order to be fully functional, it'd have to be bigger, and at some points lighter. But hey, we made a kite, we gave it a good home, we got a good walk in the afternoon. I'm not complaining!

The commentary in the videos is hilarious, especially the inflection when you say "this city's wind is fickle."

this wind is fickle!

...that Kate and I have been friends for years, and met when we were both living in Chicago. :)
