Street Junk Sculpture by carry_me_Zaddy

July 20th, 2010 3:27 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a sculpture by arranging things you find on the street.

The pictures below tell the tale of how a handful of junk scattered along the streets and back alleys of Chicago's northside became a piece of sculpted art (arguably). All found items are documented below with the exception of a small wooden stick. This stick originally auditioned for the role of Mr. Stick in my Add a Useless Rope praxis, but unfortunately the director was looking for a performer with larger proportions. Impressed with the little stick's nuanced performance, however, it was thankfully recast in the role of support beam for this praxis. Thank you, little stick. Thank you.

Finding Things 01

Finding Things 01

A big, rusty nut and bolt. Definitely a fun start in my search for sculpting materials.

Finding Things 02

Finding Things 02

Found these two peeking out from under a parking bump. I have no idea what they are, but they look fun.

Finding Things 03

Finding Things 03

The King is squashed! Long live the King!

Finding Things 04

Finding Things 04

Again, no clue what these are, but they look potentially useful.

Finding Things 05

Finding Things 05

Another squashed item. This time a wheel from perhaps a rolling office chair.

Finding Things 06

Finding Things 06

Oo, a hair band. This is good. I need things to hold the other items together. Must find more things like this.

Finding Things 07 & 08

Finding Things 07 & 08

A blue pointy thing AND a white pointy thing. The white one is a care tag from a potted plant. The blue is unknown, but at least it will add some color.

Finding Things 09

Finding Things 09

Shoestring. This could be good for all kinds of uses.

Finding Things 10

Finding Things 10

Shiny! Washers always come in handy.

Finding Things 11

Finding Things 11

A rubber band.

Finding Things 12

Finding Things 12

JACKPOT!! Ok, technically this isn't actually on the street, but it's right next to it. These colored birthday candles will be good as an adhesive and/or paint.

Finding Things 13

Finding Things 13

A second rubber band. This should be enough. Let's see what I can make out of this junk.

Assembling Things 01

Assembling Things 01

Dirty, dirty things! First I washed everything except the candles with dish soap and water.

Assembling Things 02

The large bolt makes for a solid base especially with the nut supporting it upright. The opposite end of the bolt had a cubed peg which these plastic things fit around almost perfectly. The wheel had ridges that held it in place between the posts of the plastic things. Hm, I think I see something emerging.

Assembling Things 03

Assembling Things 03

Stretchy! The rubber bands and washer can help hold the squashed marker and other items to the base.

Assembling Things 04

Assembling Things 04

The marker and black plastic pieces became tail plumes. The blue shard makes an excellent beak. To give the illusion of feathers, I cut strips into the plant care tag and draped the shoestring from the wings. The wings and head needed a tad more support, so I used the hair band and a small stick.

Assembling Things 05

Assembling Things 05

The end cap of the marker broke off, but it will make an excellent eye. I melt the candle wax on one side to color it, and the other to adhere it. Then I drizzle the remaining candles onto the wings, head, body and plumage to give it more color

Ta-Da! A sculpture of the rarely glimpsed Snorkalak Rex.

Snorkalak Rex has got his eye on you!

The stately Snorkalak Rex flares his tail plumage hoping to attract a mate.
