The Callouses on Your Hands by Jennifer Gergely

When I first saw this, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. My favorite scar (if you can have one) has a rather insane story behind it....unfortunately, its on my scalp, and unless I shave my head, there's no way to get a picture. So, on to the second option. Unfortunately, this other scar doesn't have as nice of a memory.
This scar is on the back of my leg, in the bend of the knee. I got this one afternoon in the summer between 10th and 11th grade. My dad and I were walking my dog, Patch, around our neighborhood. We were talking about my school, plan for the summer, how god awful hot it was, etc etc, and we weren't paying much attention to Patch. At some point, her leash got behind my legs, so that my dad was on my left (slightly in front of me) and she was on my right (also slightly in front of me) with the leash touching the back of my legs. Suddenly, she saw a squirrel and bolted after it. We had her on a nylon retractable leash that had about 20 ft of cord or so. Nylon cord causes one heck of a rope burn when you pull it fast enough. I tried to grab the cord with my hands to stop it while I yelled at my dad to stop the dog. He didn't realize what had happened until the dog had run through almost the entire length of the leash (in his defense, he couldn't see me and he has lost part of his hearing). I ended up with major rope burns on the inside of each knee, burns on my hands, and a cut from the rope from when I managed to push the leash off the crook of my knee . I couldn't walk for a day and spent weeks limping. Both of my knees were scarred with dark line, but since it happened a long time ago, only the one on my left knee remains as a faint mark. While I forgave my dad right away, he felt guilty for months afterward. Even years later, I would jump if I felt the dog leash brush my leg.
This scar created a period of awkwardness between me and my dad that took almost a year to go away completely. After that, whenever we would walk the dog together he would keep her on a tight leash and yank her away if she got too close to me. Even though it was an accident and no one's fault, he couldn't forgive himself for not paying attention to me. Eventually, we both got over the incident and things went back to normal, although this will always be a painful memory for me.

Rope burn. Nasty stuff. I have had a few of these, but they all healed away eventually.
