Mic Night by Jeanne Marie

July 6th, 2006 7:10 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Perform in front of an audience, be it an open mic night, a karoke bar, or an amatuer figure skating contest.

Be sure to catalog your event.

Extra credit if you are afraid of the public.

I have to admit: I am not afraid of the public. But that didn't stop me from feeling nauseous before I got on stage to tell a story at PorchLight last week.

I tried uploading a screenshot of the web page, but it doesn't work. So until I scan the program and draw a picture of what I looked like up there, talking (because it would have been way too weird and seventh-grade band recital-esque if I'd had someone take a picture of me...), you'll have to make do with this link:

http://www.porchlightsf.com/past.html

see, there's my name in the "Friends on all Fours" show list.

Luckily, I did not actually throw up on the audience. But I'm not sure I"d do it again....

What was your story about? How did it go over?

I told a funny story about my first day of work at my last job, as ZooMobile Coordinator at The Oakland Zoo. It was the only day that I had to train with the person who I was replacing, and so it was a bit hectic. I went along to a second grade classroom in Martinez, and even though I had never handled any of the animals before, I had to put a sulfur-crested cockatoo back in her carrier because she wouldn't stop screaming. After a short stand-off in front of the entire class, I got her back into her carrier... but she did bite me. It was the only time she did, though!
People laughed a lot, which was nice. My friends all said it was good (but they have to say that, right?). But last week I got this e-mail from someone I only kind of know:

"I saw you at Porch Light earlier this week. You were great!! Definitely one of the best storytellers of the night. I was impressed... I could NEVER do that."

So I think it went over well!
