Fortune Not Cookie by Kingtycoon Methuselah

January 20th, 2011 5:14 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Install fortunes of your devising in permanent or non-permanent media in openable structures, such that passersby will come across them.

So this was a pretty easy mission for a lazy afternoon, although it did get lightly harrowing toward the final execution.

I used some old fortune cookie fortunes and modified what they said to make other fortunes - and then I put them in a box and then I took them to a mall downtown - where I went to meet a non-collaborating friend for a movie.

I left them at the fountain - where I had been sitting and waiting for her - and that's where the situation got slightly tense.

See the basketball stadium is right next to where I was and so there were big crowds owing to a game that night. Also a lot of security - so I felt kind of like I could get in trouble, or at least make an unwanted fuss - in clear opposition to the spirit of the mission - I wanted a fortunate mission not to scare people (for a change)!

Anyhow, I just left the thing open and then acted like I'd just noticed it, I drew one of the things out and then acted like it was a charming surprise - which I guess is the point of the mission. Anyhow - after that I just left to go meet my friend - and while I was getting ready to document the people taking the fortunes - I ran into a long lost friend who I ended up having a long conversation with - totally interrupting my evidence gathering - but still - there's a little bit of documentation... Enough I think.

Anyhow - after that we went to a movie - and afterward the box and fortunes were gone. So I think fairly successful for such a modest mission?

One of the Fortunes

One of the Fortunes

I made these fortunes out of some old library slips that I found on an unrelated adventure and which I generally use as calling cards. I have kind of a lot of them.

See?

See?

Yes, lots and lots. I made about 30 fortunes of this type and style.

My penmanship is fairly poor.

In gradeschool I got a D in the handwriting class. It was the first of many episodes where I disappointed my parents.

Lots and lots of fortunes

Lots and lots of fortunes

I folded them all in half and wrote variations of - 'please take only one' on all of them.

I made this box out of a preexisting box

A couple of really nice ties came in it, I got them for christmas. I painted it and then applied my poor penmanship liberally.

Here's where I put the whole affair

This is the Inverted Hell - which is the regnal seat of the Wasteland - it is here that the empty chair sits and is dared by none for none wish to rule here.

Only had one bite that I could document though...

Anyhow - there's a mall there and I left the box on the fountain there. You can see the people looking at the fortunes - this lady I think is reading some to her kid.

Here they are

Here they are

All the things are nested in their box, fortunes, not things...
