Journey to the End of the Night Chicago by kristin gish, steve rules

April 20th, 2008 9:06 PM / Location: 41.908925,-87.67739

INSTRUCTIONS: A pursuit across Chicagø in 6 parts, staged on the night of April 19th, 2008.

The city spreads out before you. Rushing from point to point, lit by the slow strobe of fluorescent buses and dark streets. Stumbling into situations for a stranger's signature. Fleeing unknown pursuers, breathing hard, admiring the landscape and the multitude of worlds hidden in it.

For one night, drop your relations, your work and leisure activities, and all your usual motives for movement and action, and let yourself be drawn by the attractions of the chase and the encounters you find there.

If you participated in Journey Chicagø - as a player, chaser, or volunteer - please post your adventure here. We encourage you to be detailed and thorough. If you have photographs, please post them. If you don't, consider making a comic. Describe your chases, the people you met, what you thought of the route, the checkpoints, and the city in general. Feel free to make opulent references to Debord, de Certeau, Céline, Psychogeography, Social Plastik, subversive play, Reclaim the Streets, and the aesthetics of failure.

Yours,
Dax Tran-Caffee

UPDATE: Now with pictures!!

What an unexpected way to spend my weekend. This task entered my life sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday and made itself real on Saturday when Calyx and Myrna Minx arrived at my apartment and Steve Rules was already there. It was sunny and overcast at the same time as we made our way into Chicago.

We parked our car next to Wicker Park after seeing a quite interesting collection of scavengers gathered around the fountain. Sign up, get your ribbon, read the rules... Dax speaks on his device and we're out. Steve Richey, Calyx and I formed a team as Myrna Minx had departed to work the second stop.

I had no intentions of finishing or collecting any prize but after being separated between 2 and 3.. with Calyx and I sprinting into a parking garage, my ending up hiding under a crane.. and Steve Richey outrunning the chaser.. we all ended up separated and upon reunion at the Billy Goat I was very determined.

Calyx ended up splitting from the team as he felt the need to do and we didn't reunite with him until stop 4. Befitting the galactic rules of karma, Calyx had become a chaser. HE informed us that he had a plan and this caused uneasiness but I couldn't say it lasted. On our way to stop 5 we encountered many chasers, most of which we successfully avoided. Technique became interesting with reds teaming up with blues and many people trying to tag in safe zones.

My lungs were in stitches and my legs were on fire. Our only method of safety was going at least 2-4 blocks out of the way in any direction to avoid chasers between checkpoints. The miles we walked seemed at the time to be endless and I felt as if my legs would crack into two pieces each and splinter each other. Stumbling through Grant Park my breath was heavy and Steve Rules and I had eyes wide open and hesitant steps.

The sidewalk of Lakeshore Drive felt like heaven and i collapsed there fully stretched, head on the pavement.. looking at the sky and not caring about the way I must've looked. This was a trophy in itself, this rest.. this stop.. this safety point. We kept going.. although someone tried to tag us right off lakeshore. We were in the safezone and weren't to be misinformed. We're not company for misery or the like.

At the end.. a group, a joyous group.. the lights dimly lit around the aquarium, reflections upon the water that looked like fire.. and a very happy, very unique collection of people, adventurous and triumphant people laughing and smiling and relaxing on blankets and grass.

We got medals.. and although we were much too exhausted to stay for the after party.. the time was insanely enjoyable. One cab back to the el and then in the car to home.

How about you??

Dax giving directions, barking orders, etc.
"The chasers have bikes. This is fair."
This is what it looks like when you're running.
The first stop. They had cupcakes, which Calyx took but they just made him thirsty. If you're doing one of these bring water!
Options.
Waiting for the train in Chicago's lovely subways.
We ran (unnecessarily) the entire way from the beginning to stop 1, resulting in sweatiness.
Rock and roll. Deal with it.
This is Calyx. Unbeknownst to us, he was plotting deception!
Very pretty (not pictured: two chasers on the other side of the bridge who walked right past us!).
The Billy Goat Tavern, after we got separated by a chaser who was fast, but not fast enough. Kristin (left) slid under a parking garage barrier! I (steve, right) just ran. I'm something of an athlete.
Whilst undergoing the longest train wait ever, these fellows provided us with some great music. Tip your street musicians.
STAMP HERE ^
This tower of awesome was checkpoint 4. Before we saw it we were worried we wouldn't find it (we forgot what the last checkpoint told us to look for).
The tower. Steve wrote "solipsism". Kristin wrote "Amazing Nachos".
A street populated by ghosts of light! I am kidding. It is a camera trick.
The walk across the Roosevelt street bridge was very long, even though the whole thing (thankfully!) is a safe zone.
Don't even try to go through it!
Checkpoint number 5. I'm still not sure what two girls one dress meant.
Checkpoint number six! On the left: cool people who had cupcakes at checkpoint 1 (I don't know their names but they were rad). On the right, Myrna Minx, who was at checkpoint 2.
We made it the whole way without being tagged! Go team Amazing Nachos!
Kristin proudly displays her ribbon. We did not think we would make it this far without being tagged.
Tired...

I can relate to feeling 'the drive' by the 3rd checkpoint. My story's coming up in a bit -- yours is the most interesting I've read so far.

This is an excellent write up.

If you have any pictures, I can't wait to see them. If you didn't carry a camera on the night of, I would still love to see a photo of you with your medal!

I'm so upset I missed it! But it was Passover. I can't be out gallivanting while the angel of death approaches.

Glorious.

And then in the morning you and Steve made us blackberry pancakes and grilled cheese sandwiches!
