Make it Soft by kristin gish, steve rules

A Soft Stop
Make it soft? To make what soft? When we contemplate the thought of softness, perhaps a soft feel comes to mind. Or, maybe, a soft word.

To be told, several times a day, to STOP in such rude language is really uncalled for. What have we come to? A little civility is in order. To that end, we have decided to add a few kind words to a common street sign.

Of course, there is the constant problem of adhesion. One must think of these things. A sensible person might assume that a street sign is magnetic. We are sensible people.

Furthermore, we were wrong. Stop signs must be made out of tin, or perhaps they possess a field which repels magnets. In either case, the magnets did not stick. Our idea of non-semi-permanent harmless vandalism was foiled. Our playful placement of sign modification had to become more... tacky.

Attempt number two yielded great results. This so-called "packaging tape" may have more uses than simply packaging. The end result is quite worthwhile.

As is recommended in these cases, success is rewarded by sushi. Here is a context-free picture of a tentacle. The creature who is missing a tentacle was unavailable for comment.

The end... or is it?
About five days later we decided to go back.

In the interim we had had a vicious snowstorm. We knew that the likelihood of our modification surviving was slim, given that it was in one of the windiest places in the country. We made haste.

It was getting late so we knew we had to hurry. a quick detour through an abandoned town did not deter us. We found our sign... still intact!

We will probably check on it periodically... watch this space!

It is because they are made of aluminum.
I know this because the Barony of Nordskogen (the Twin Cities, where I used to reside when I first joined the SCA) had a fighter who had connections in the highway department and could get a hold of street sign aluminum and made shields out of it.

Fantastic. All everyday life imperatives should be augmented with softer words.
Nice! It reminded me of this task (and let me read great completions).
Also, thanks for the info about stop signs being unmagnetic.
