Player Photograph by inquisitive dragonfly

September 21st, 2008 12:00 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: The first task reads: "Take a picture of yourself. " This is the only time a sous rature gesture will be made, so let us remind you: you may be your character, but your character need not be you.

The selection of the adjective ("inquisitive") was based on a stray thought to have a description that was both accurate for me and appropriate for my intentions in joining this conglomeration. The selection of a noun for the adjective to modify was somewhat more challenging, as I (unlike other members of my family) have never been associated with a single nickname or animal. Except for this once, when a co-worker decided that a dragonfly should grace my birthday card, as I had been seen wearing a dragonfly earring on several occasions and otherwise had no distinguishing characteristics to allow for personalization. So "dragonfly" it was - which gave me the theme for the player photograph.

I recently came into possession of a set of dragonfly hairclips. My adventures will probably be solo, and I have no desire to photograph myself doing them. I can, however, allow my flight of dragonflies to accompany me and be photographed in my stead, should the need arise. Thus, they should be in the player photograph. And in deference to the me/not-me relationship between myself and my character, the photo should be *of* me without actually *showing* me.

The photograph itself is quite cliche'd: the eye, in close up. I don't subscribe to any notion that the eyes are the window to the soul (and if they were, my contacts should provide a nice shutter), it simply seemed the most effective way to get both myself and my dragonflies in a single frame. My left eye is shown, as the photo is taken of a mirror. No poetic image of a mirror personality is intended. I simply lacked either patience in taking self-portraits or a fancy camera with a swiveling LCD, so taking a picture of a mirror near me was much easier than taking a picture of myself.
