Random Parade by SNORLAX

September 28th, 2006 8:48 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a parade in a public place at a time and place that wouldn't be traditional for a parade (not on a holiday down a main street) and document it. The parade can consist of just you, but the more people, the better. Invent a holiday/reason for your parade, or just leave people wondering. Decorate your parade vehicle, whether it be a car, bike, skateboard, shopping cart, etc.. Dress up, create signs, throw candy, play music, wave to people, try to convince people to vote for you (for some made up office/cause)... do whatever you can to encourage a parade-like atmosphere.

There must be a festival, parade, or fair every day of the weekend in this city. I’ve never been much of a storyteller, but here’s our contribution:

THE FLOAT:

The classic “Thursday nights crew” loveparade vehicle: The Temple of Boom. Way too loud for my camera’s microphone to pick. Powered by generators and car batteries.

HOUSE MUSIC ALL DAY LONG:

Doing my thing.

MY BIGGEST FAN OF THE DAY:

I suspect she must have had a lot of something. She kissed everyone in my vicinity kept coming from behind me and humping me, and tried to knock me over a few times. I guess it was kinda funny, but I didn’t know how to react to her.

MY BIGGEST FAN’S BOYFRIEND:

I don’t think he liked me.

THE ONE, THE ONLY: FRANK CHU

um.. while it's way cool you were in love parade, i don't quite think it fulfills the task as that parade is not really random. if you had been the one to start it, that would work, but i don't think you were the one who started love parade originally.

even though we drove it around before the parade?
even still, drunkards, ravers, and e-tards partying at cityhall, how random is that?
even though i didn't start the parade, i was insturmental in the establishment of the float at the main parade. i also promoted it in my own way and got MANY to show up, including at least 5 other sf0 players that i can think of at the moment.
if i had started it myself, I think this task would have been more appropriate:

the parade itself has a random feel, yes.. but you didn't create it. the point of this task was to create a completely random parade. one that wasn't preplanned where there weren't already people gathered. one which would confuse onlookers as to its purpose. i suppose if you took your vehicle and created a different parade elsewhere that would work. but it shouldn't be something that is confused with the real parade. in my mind, just driving around before the regular parade doesn't really give the feel of creating a separate parade.. but i wasn't there, so i don't really know what it was like. and your task proof doesn't mention that, and your comment barely focuses on it. all in all.. the impression your proof gives is that you were in the love parade.. an established parade.. and while you were instrumnetal in doing things for that parade, it isn't creating one yourself.. which is what this task asks.

i don't want to be bitchy or nitpicky, yet i created this task with an idea of someone creating something random andi think my description of the task is fairly detailed. I just really want to see this one done well.

A - "the point of this task was to create a completely random parade. one that wasn't PREPLANNED ....." You can't have any kind of parade without planning. (your task didn't mention planning btw)

B - "the point of this task was to create a completely random parade .... where there weren't already people gathered." Its kinda hard to find a place in SF without people gathering on a weekend. I could have done it on a more deserted street, but what is the point of a parade without much of an audience. Once AGAIN, your task made no mention of people gathering or not gathering.

C- Maybe I shouldn't have posted any media picturing the main parade, since that seems to blur the random part of the parade, but i did create a parade, not alone granted ( your task did not require that i do it alone) You can't have a float with 3 people dancing by yourself.

D - "which would confuse onlookers as to its purpose." Your task made no mention of confusion. I don't know how you feel about events, but when I am organizing or involved in an event, the idea is to entertain, NOT confuse.

E - Like you said, you weren't there. We did much to create a "parade like atmosphere." Like I said, I'm not much of a storyteller, I'll work on that.

Your comments indicate a clear difference between your own personal vision of a random parade and the task itself.

I have to back Star up on this one, it looks like you had an awesome time, but the whole time I was checking out your proof I was like, ummm, did he create this?
It's a little like being naked at Burning Man you know? Sure the task itself says be naked in public, so being naked in public at Burning Man would count. But it doesn't really fulfill the heart of the task. There are lots of people who don't think about the heart of the task, what the task really means, and I think people generally just ignore those kind of people. But I like to think that you aren't one of them and that's why Star and I are engaging in this dialogue.
Also- it says at a time and place that wouldn't be traditional for a parade. If you are in an already established parade, that can't really count.

i guess it is like being naked at burning man.
without images from the main parade, the proof wouldn't have been half as interesting

while i do feel I accomplished what was at the heart of the task, it was WAY WAY too conveniant.

so what say you two?
do-over or the red X?

either way, i'll make double sure i earn your vote next time.

you may, of course, do as you like.
If it were me, I would probably follow Miss. Beverly Penns example, and ask to have it removed, until such time as you choose to re-submit it. I can't wait to see your next parade!

i do agree that some of my comments were not specific to the task's requirements.. more just to give a general idea of what i meant by the whole idea. your comment about how an event is meant to entertain, not confuse.. but they could do both. if i saw a random parade, without any knowledge of a reason for it in a random place.. it might confuse me a bit. also it would entertain me.

and i don't mean you need to have a parade without any planning. just that love parade is an established parade, with an established audience. my idea of "create" isn't to run an established parade, it's to invent one yourself. as rock candy said.. it may fit the letter of the task, but not the heart. the tricky bit is not everyone interprets things the same way.

i would love to see you do it over and see what you can create. i've seen you do neat stuff before.
