Potted Plant Distribution by chaos shard

April 10th, 2008 2:40 PM / Location: 36.531885,-87.35954

INSTRUCTIONS: Acquire a small potted plant. Leave the plant in a store, cafe, or a location of your choosing that has lack of potted plants.

For the first part of this task “acquire a small potted plant”, I went to Hobby Lobby. (This is a wonderful craft store. If there is one in your area, I recommend using it. If not, I suggest starting a petition to get one. They’re great.) I bought a very small potted plant from the store’s dollhouse miniatures section. When I got it out of its package, though, I decided that it was too small and too fake to go with the spirit of this task.
So, I went to Wal-Mart. I bought several small, ceramic flowerpots and a half dozen flowers of unknown origin and type. If anyone knows what these are, I’d love it if you told me. I picked them only because they were pretty and brightly colored, and therefore should stand out well in their new homes.
I planted the mystery flowers in their pots, which I labeled “sf0.org”. That way, anyone who finds the plants and becomes curious about them can go to the site and still be puzzled, but they might join up anyway. We need more members here in Tennessee.
Then I had to pick the location at which I would abandon these plants to the whims of fate.
For reasons that don’t even make sense to myself, I chose the following locations: my roommate’s closet, an art object in front of the campus library, a sink hole on campus, a gas station, a tabletop gaming store called Gamers’ Guild, an alley between a church and… I have no idea what that building is. Then I convinced my minions… I mean my friends and fiancé… to help me reach these locations. I can’t drive, so this is always a necessary step.
Placing the plants had an oddly funereal feel to it, at least at the outside locations. I’m not sure why, it just felt very solemn. I suppose it’s the imagery of placing a flower at or near some kind of monument. Though I’m not certain a gas pump counts as any kind of monument.

This is the flower that was given to my roommate. You can see the website on the pot in this image. Also: what is this flower?

This is the statue in front of APSU's library. I don't know why, but I've always liked this thing so it seemed like a good place to put a potted plant.

This is the flower in its new artistic home.

Full image of the flower and the statue. I don't know why, but I've always liked this thing.

Location of flower... I think it was number three. This is where I get my tiny pewter figures to paint.

This is inside the guild. I was originally going to put the plant on one of these tabletops, because it'd be funny to have a potted plant next to doom castle, but they were using it and I didn't want to mess up their campaign.

This is where the flower finally ended up. I imagine the store's owner will be very confused. I'll see if it's still there Friday when I go get a figure I ordered.

alley.JPG

This is the dark creepy alleyway I decided to traipse through to distribute a flower. The gray building is a church. The red brick one could be anything.

These are two of my minions, who insisted on going into the dark, creepy alley with me as back up. The sign in the background probably explains what the red brick building is.

This is the fourth flower. It got left next to someone's smoking spot, as there was a flower pot full of cigarette butts nearby.

gas pump.JPG

This is the flower on a malfunctioning gas pump. Someone is going to be very puzzled.

Flower number five. It's on a gas station pump. When do you see a potted plant on a gas station, after all?

Final plant.JPG

Final plant.JPG

This is the final plant I placed. The rocks under it form the letters AP, for Austin Peay. I took a full picture of the sinkhole with the gravel icon, but because it was around midnight when I placed this one, the picture did not come out.

I liked how small the plants were but how much they stood out though. Especially liked the statue thing.
