The Highest Place by transit monkey

"But this doesn't even look like Chicago." <-my brother when I showed him these pictures
Once again, this is something that should have been uploaded a long time ago, but alas, I am a busy college student, and I do only what I can with my time.
I thought for a long, long time about what I should use for this task. I thought about going to the top of IIT tower, the highest place at my school. I thought about climbing on my roof. I thought about hundreds of other things that never really felt right, or interesting enough.
Then, one day my friend and I were walking past Marina City, a three building complex just north of the Chicago Loop. I've always been fascinated by these buildings which include two circular, 60-some story condo buildings, and the House of Blues-Chicago edition.
Designed by Bertrand Goldberg, Marina city opened in 1962 as apartments. It was later converted to condos. We went to the management office to see if they had any literature to look at and maybe take with us, and the guy in the office said he wasn't doing anything so he could show us around. We toured the roof, the common areas of the building, and even a few units, one of which was in it's entirely original condition. Unfortunately, my camera died while we were on the roof, so that is all I have pictures of.
The roof was probably the most interesting part, though. As much as I loved the building, the view from the roof struck me as something very different. I was so used to seeing the city from certain perspectives, that seeing it from the roof of Marina City was very alien. It really made me think about a lot of other things from different perspectives, too. I'm not going to say it changed my life or anything, but it did change the way I view things.
A new perspective can always be refreshing.

I love them because of how obvious it is that those garages were built with future flying cars in mind.

I don't know what your brother was thinking. Those pictures are so recognizably Chicago to me.

my brother is the type of person who has only seen chicago from oak street beach and the skydeck.
I love those buildings. They look like they were built by science fiction in the 1960's.
