Make A New Face by miss understanding

October 29th, 2007 6:22 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Using facepaint, halloween makeup, a mask, or whatever other materials you choose, make a new face for yourself for a day. Record people's reactions.

I knew as soon as I saw this task what I wanted to do, but I've been in the process of moving for the past few weeks so everything was boxed up. I finally got the last of my things moved to my new place Wednesday, and by Friday I had been able to dig out my "new face". I received this red rubber mask as a gift a few years ago, along with some latex socks and a dress. While I've worn both the socks and the dress on several occasions, I've never been able to put the hood to use. I believe it's intended fit is with the entire head being covered, save for the hole which would go over the mouth. Just describing that makes me feel claustrophobic and I needed to see to navigate my surroundings so I kept the opening up by my eyes.

I couldn't wear my new face while driving, but I had it on otherwise. I decided to run some errands, which included a drug store, the dollar store and the video store. The reactions I got were interesting, or rather the lack of reactions. Everyone was very kind and treated me the same way I've experienced sans mask. I did notice some fellow customers looking at me a second longer than usual, but then it was back to shopping. The times when I did need to speak to ask where something was or to discuss my method of payment, the clerks were very patient as that meant that I had to take a second to pull my portal to the world down a bit so that they could understand what I was saying. I am not sure if my experiment falling so close to Halloween or my living in a college town has anything to do with my experiences. I like to think it was because folks who display obvious differences are no longer such shocks to the majority of the public and as such are treated much more like those who don't have their differences on their sleeve, so to speak.

I tore my room apart looking not only for the mask, but for the tie I decided I just HAD to wear with it.

I would have loved to see a photo of you wearing the mask in the dollar store.

What the hell's a dollar store?

It is a store where everything costs a dollar.

There are impostor dollar stores where somethings will cost two or three dollars, but I don't shop at those. I keep it real.

Oh man you don't have dollar stores?

We have 'pound shops', but nothing as magnificent as that which it pictured above!

this picture of the balloon mask is stuck in my head. (much like a song gets stuck in your head) it makes me think of a 4 year old robot going to his/her/its first day at school
