Journey to the End of the Night DC by miss understanding

May 4th, 2008 11:57 AM

INSTRUCTIONS:

The city spreads out before you. Rushing from point to point, lit by the slow strobe of fluorescent buses and dark streets. Stumbling into situations for a stranger's signature. Fleeing unknown pursuers, breathing hard, admiring the landscape and the multitude of worlds hidden in it.

For one night, drop your relations, your work and leisure activities, and all your usual motives for movement and action, and let yourself be drawn by the attractions of the chase and the encounters you find there.

If you participated in the Journey in any way (as a player, chaser, or volunteer), please post your story here. Tell us a story of Danger. Fear. Drive. Craftiness. Power. Adventure!

The more thorough you are, the better. If you have photographs, please include them! Even better, draw your experience! Describe your chases, the people you met, what you thought of the route, the checkpoints, and how you perceived the city.

Thanks,
Spidere

This morning I woke up...

This morning I woke up...

slightly dazed and thinking I had just had the strangest dream.

I dreamt that I found myself in the nation's capital...

I dreamt that I found myself in the nation's capital...

through the great help of one Spidere, who linked me to a friend of his who was kind enough to let me carpool with him.

I was there for...

I was there for...

some event...a game of sorts...in which I had to survive until the end of the night...

The task was...

The task was...

to make it all around the city to certain checkpoints while wearing a blue arm band (the blue band signifying something like being totally awesome) and to avoid being tagged by the villains with orange arm bands (orange being the color of villains, of course).

When the night began...

When the night began...

I almost got caught but was able to slip away (most likely because my underwear had stars) and it was smooth, ninja like, sailing for the rest of the night.

At the checkpoints...

At the checkpoints...

there were various other superheroes, waiting to give me the next clue so that I could continue on my mission.

On my journey...

On my journey...

I met another brave gal who was sneaking around the city and we teamed up because her knowledge of the town was far superior to mine--she even showed me some of the sights, fancy fancy!

We stopped by some of the memorials...

We stopped by some of the memorials...

to honor other brave souls.

At some of the checkpoints...

At some of the checkpoints...

there were tasks to do. At the third checkpoint, we each had to make a piece of origami. I made a teenage love note.

Origami was left behind...

Origami was left behind...

by those who came before me. I knew we were hot on the trail.

By this time...

By this time...

my companion and I were tired, but we knew we had to carry on! There could be puppies stuck in trees waiting at the end who desperately needed our help!

During our adventure...

During our adventure...

we came across some wonderful people having a picnic in the middle of the night. They were kind and allowed us to sit and chat with them and their stuffed friends for awhile.

There were many wonderful secret agents...

There were many wonderful secret agents...

who helped us along our epic journey. Feather boas rock. Still having a blue arm band after 6 of the 7 check points also rocks.

Finally...

Finally...

we made it to the last checkpoint, where we met up with all of the other wonderful superheroes from the game.

Tired and sweaty and filthy...

Tired and sweaty and filthy...

but feeling accomplished, I enjoyed the company of many wonderful people. I also enjoyed still having my blue arm band. Boo-ya.

And then, as I rolled out of bed...

And then, as I rolled out of bed...

with my body feeling like I had run a marathon while wearing high heeled boots, I realized it was no dream at all! I had survived DC. (Special thanks to Spidere, Justin, and Amanda and it was wonderful to meet you Dax..as well as the bunches and bunches of other swell people whose names I cannot recall because I am a second rate superhero).

This was a fantastic, amazing night. I'm really glad you made it. This was a great writeup--it was absolutely a night full of superheroes. I'm glad to see some good checkpoint photos, too!

(200 more email addresses to decipher and type in...and then start on my own writeup... I'm tempted to tell other people's incredible stories, of which there are many--but I should give them a chance to put them up first. :)

Thanks so much!

I am really glad I ended up being able to do it. My acupuncturist helped a lot with my not feeling so well and you helped to actually get me down there. Kudos to you for putting such a great event together and having a turn out that was way beyond anything I expected to see! I hope that some of those folks will find their way over to this site and get roped in. I can't wait to hear everyone else's stories.
