I decided to out my Father's pantry of all the out of date crackers, pasta, mouldy jam and such like. At the very back in the corner was a small red and yellow cardboard tube, the tin end was perforated and would twist to open a pattern of holes through which the contents could be sprinkled. The vintage looking lettering proudly advertised the contents as being powdered parmesan cheese. I was instantly transported to childhood recollections of my mother making spaghetti Bolognese and the one time it arrived with a liberal sprinkling of parmesan cheese on top- It smelled strongly of sick, Tantrums and tears ensued as I firmly refused to let it pass my lips. Decades on, as I turned over the container in my hand a price tag appeared, 1/4d - one shilling and fourpence! That little tube of parmesan had sat at the back of the cupboard rejected and forgotten since pre-decimal days (1971) - I almost regret throwing it away now.
...and almost equally unreasonably sad that the Parmesan got tossed, as I'm curious as to what it became.
