Ethereal Cartography by N Mutans, Ted Pro

INSTRUCTIONS: Make a map of something that does not exist physically.

Well, here we are. I'm visiting Mutans up in Seattle, and when talking about what to do, I said that I wanted to do SF Zero things. This is the project I originally signed up to do months ago and never did; I don't have a good reason why.

But excuses are less interesting than actions!

My hotel here has "carts" that they will send up to your room. Some of them are "romance carts" and some art "business carts" and some are "toy carts." We got the "art cart."

My favorite part of this cart is, to be sure, the Spirograph.

So I made a map of some social possibilities!

Two people are represented by spirograph-like donut-type circles. I don't think that is how I see humanity in general, but for this map, that was the best fit.

I tried to map out the possible flourishes for a social interaction between two people.

Person A has a few options.

Here's our theoretical Person A standing in theoretical space, which may seem to resemble Mutans in a hotel room (depending on your browser settings.)

Person A can examine the wall, then report.

...or Person A can turn away and point to the sky.

...or Person A can spin away dramatically.

("Slow down, these pictures are blurry." "No, I'm spinning.")

Lastly, Person A can storm away and return for a retort.

And here's theoretical Person B, also in theoretical space, which (depending on your OS and network connection) may be rendered graphically as me in a corresponding spot in the hotel room.

And Person B has some options.

Person B could examine the floor in mopey contemplation.

...or Person B could mill about thoughtfully...

(...sadly, the milling about throughout the room and on the bed pictures didn't turn up. But I liked this picture so much I made it my profile picture.)

Or Person B could begin dancing.

Or Person B could stomp around lecturing.

And, of course, since this is theoretical, there's always the possibility that a tiger will storm around and maul both of them.

Poor theoretical Person B got theoretically mauled very quickly.

It was tremendous good fun to take a Spirograph and use it to make a map. Then label the map with flourish. Then elaborate with flourish. I hope this still counts as not physical; we weren't really people when we were doing these things.

A map of possible social flourishes between two people. Black represents thoughtful. Blue represents fabulous. Red represents angry. Drawn on Spirograph. People are, I think we can all agree, thoughtful spirography donut things.

The Art Cart! I think this was intended mostly to keep children distracted, but I can't hide my delight.

I really like this approach to the task. Using physical objects in a specific spatial frame, but removing them and their setting and mapping only possibilities that they would have in any other location. Clever. And clearly you had fun doing it!

Hooray for spirographs!
