A Strange Kind of Love by kristy lasiesa, Terpsichore

INSTRUCTIONS: Express your love for something conventional in an unconventional way

OR

Express your love for something unconventional in a conventional way

i've been trying to complete this task for quite sometime now, and just recently (with the help of my roommate, kristy) pulled it it off. when i first signed up for the task this summer, i knew that i wanted to express my love for life. after many weeks of thought, i decided that life was sort of an unconventional thing. so many times we take for granted the little moments of bliss that happen throughout or everyday lives. we don't stop and appreciate how fortunate we are to live in a place with so many opportunities to stop and appreciate. we rarely realize the things the make us feel alive, that we look forward to, that give us a reason to get up in the morning and start a new day.
hence, i decided to give people a reason to think about these things. i decided to express my love for life by throwing it a party (a birthday party of sorts, since birth is the beginning of life...). I called my friends, invited them to the party, and gave them one question to ponder: what makes you feel alive? i wanted to gather the answers and make them into the "party games." however, of the responses i recieved, there were two answers making up an overwhelming majority: dancing and connecting with people. my friend, alisa, put it well when she said, "what makes me feel alive. witnessing positive connection between human beings. (I use positive for lack of a better word...positive sounds too scientific, but good sounds too subjective). whether the connection be as simple as a someone helping another person pick up dropped belongings or the unity of a group of people shamelessly professing their love for Harry Potter in Oak Park. it may even be youtube videos like the Free Hugs and One World ones... witnessing these interactions gives me hope and reassurance that there are at least some people who recognize the importance of unity in life."
thus, a potentially awkward gathering came to pass. kristy and i invited our friends and some people we didn't really know, and told them to invite their friends. a lot of people ended up not being able to make it, so we thought, "why not have another one?! everyone deserves to celebrate!"
the following photos show a little glimpse of the mix-cd-makin', booty-shakin', tea-drinkin', people-meetin' absolutely glorious and not awkward get togethers that resulted from a mutual love of being alive.

Wow, I feel like I just went to a huge party. And now I'm pooped.

Neat.

Beautiful sentiment, and the party looks like great fun.

Somehow, I have a strong feeling if I asked my friends what makes them feel alive, I'd get a very different, although perhaps equally repetitive, set of answers. May have to try it, just for comparison.

- edit -
I was originally not going to vote for this, on the grounds that it seemed not unconventional enough. But, on further reflection, throwing a party for life does fulfill that requirement.

Standing up on the stool and professing your love for life was brilliant.

Thoughtful.

Looks like you had fun. Which is what life's all about, in the end.

Have you been watering the Tree of Life?

Hey did you kill the Tree of Life...cereal? You better be taking care of it:) I need pictures to prove its still alive, the picture must show the date in the background otherwise I will assume you have killed the Tree of Life.

On a more serious note, your party celebrating Life meant a lot to me. The timing was amazing, it helped me celebrate instead of mourn.
THANK YOU, I needed that reminder.

oh, and maybe watering cereal would be bad...hmmm.
