I taught my friend ben the impractical, but impressive, skill of Bartending Flair. that is, spining and tossing bottles of booze in such a way that you don't spill them, even when they are open, and to look impressive enough to Get More Tips. by the end of our lesson he was able to competently perform the palm spin and the single flip, without dropping the bottle too often.
if i can find the video, i will post it.

carpeted floors to practice on also help. i haven't had any problems with shards everywhere, but then again, i haven't been practicing much recently...

Yea! This is a great impractical task. I always wish to see more bartenders doing this sort of thing.

i don't know how to interpret the fact that you used the 'mean jeannine' alter ego to make this comment...irony? sarcasm?

ah... because you made the task. got it.
My roommate Alex, during his bar schooling, took an old empty Boons bottle we had laying around, wraped it up in electrical tape, practiced swinging that around. I think once he dropped it on his foot, though it's hard to remember.
But yea, tape around glass = wont fucking get shards everywhere.
