Newspaper Cover Art by mock piratey turtle

July 10th, 2006 12:47 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Pick a day of the week. On that day, decorate the front page of every newspaper of one type (i.e. Chronicle, Examiner, NY Times, Onion, SF Weekly, Guardian etc.) in one dispenser. In your decoration, let readers know that you will be decorating the papers in that dispenser again on the same day next week. Attribute the work to yourself and mark it as piece 1/4. Repeat this process on three more occasions, such that readers of the newspaper seek out your unique copies of the paper over generic copies. You are attempting to use art to ground in time and space the abstracted (dis)location of information - "The news is always the same" and "The news is elsewhere" -expressed in a paper.

Piece 1: I chose to begin this task on the day the last article about sf0 came out in SFWeekly. That Wednesday, i woke up early, stole all the Weeklys in the dispenser nearest me. I decided I wanted each week to incorporate whatever was on the cover, and hopefully some aspect or character from sf0. I spent an ungodly amount of time painting them all, especially this first week. This was definitely my favorite of the Pieces. As per instructions, i labeled it “by pirateymonkey Piece ¼ Every Wednesday!” And labeled the others similarly.

Piece 2: The next Wednesday I was saddened to see the cover, which seemed altogether uninspiring. It was some baseball player I had never heard of. So I read the article for ideas, and it was all about how this guy was a prince among assholes, and the one Good Guy left in Baseball. So I made our hero into a Hero- that is – a knight in shiny armor. Or shiny paper maybe…

Piece 3: I then missed a week because every single one of the papers was stolen from the dispenser I had been frequenting. Hoping I might have one or two folks seeking out my papers I decided to wait till the next week and try again. This cover was my least favorite. I wanted to get away from the acrylics I had been using as they tended to take a *really* long time. I ended up using charcoal, but without any definitive plan, it just sort of came out as elaborate doodles. Ah, well.

Piece 4: Again a week of stolen newspapers. Apparently a street person had been using the dispenser sort of like a locker and keeping a bunch of stuff in there, so I decided again not to disturb and come back again. A stroke of genius while looking at the Kidnap me Gently task brought the following weeks result. All hail the Holy Zero Tripartite!

I'm in Minneapolis and voted right away. It deserves it, but I'm not 100% sure if 9 votes should equal 306 points. This Fibonacci system has some interesting pros and cons.

If it makes any difference, many of the Minneapolis SF0 Contingency were at a convention this weekend and most of them haven't been around much since as far as I know. Not that I pay attention, of course.

Either way, I really enjoyed what you did with this task and sent you a vote right away.

I think that Cunning Linguist is trying to start some shit with the MN folks...
But we always reward excellence!!
We just had a whole different geek-out experience that many of us had to attend to. Note: Many tasks that are ordinarily somewhat challenging would have been incredibly easy to do at our convention, and I believe not one of us took advantage of that fact!
SF0 FOREVER!!!!!!!
I think that the knight one is my favorite, and I have no idea why.

Hey, he didn't write that down on a post card and hand it to you in person. :P

I can't wait to meet most of you on the playa, I'm sure a number of us here are thinking the same.

Ms. c4ndy,

Your powers of deduction are unparalleled.

Yours,
cl

ps. My apologies for the oversight, Aaro. You truly are the ray of sunshine from MN.

Yeah, bugger that, Herr Linguist.

A giant grid with the bug-eyed photo of SAM! et al is what sealed the deal for me, but as a whole this is a big time completion to which I gotta give respect.

shucks.
