Arbitrary Rendezvous by mock piratey turtle, Spidere, JJason Recognition, Lank, Lincøln, Tiny Dancing Tzarina, ananas

August 20th, 2008 3:33 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Arrange to meet another person (or group of people) on a certain date.
Do not arrange a location. Try to use what you know about the other to guess.

JJason
I've had this idea for arbitrary rendezvous for a while. Something about the synchronicity, and the futility, really appealed to me. So when Spidere asked if I could come up with a task involving people in San Francisco, I decided to go ahead with the plan.

The plan that Spidere and I came up was as follows: between the hours of two and four PM SF time, I would wander the streets of Minneapolis searching for a number of other SF0ers. Meanwhile, in San Francisco, a proxy-JJason would be going to the same places I was going to, checking to see if the people were there. I'd keep in touch via telephone and it'd all be terribly exciting.

So I arrived in downtown Minneapolis at 4:00 and called in to my proxy. I was shocked and delighted to learn that my proxy would be none other than the infamous Piratey Monkey!

Over the course of the two hours, I went to five places: The public library, a fountain, City hall, the Art Museum, and a park. I picked these places for a combination of proximity to my current location (having really no sense of San Fransisco geography, I had no idea how far I was making my proxy go), likelyhood that my seekers would be searching me out there, and a need to ensure that the places I went existed both in Minneapolis and San Francisco. And since I have no idea what San Fransisco has got, I had to go with fairly generic places. I went to each place and waited until Piratey and Spidere call me to say if they were there or not.

I left a post-it note at each of places I went, telling where I was going next, in the hope that they'd find it and follow my trail. In between the library and the fountain, I lost my pencil so the fountain and city hall notes were actually blank. But I left them anyway, since synchronization is important. After that I found a pen on the ground, so I was able to write the rest of the notes.

Despite being half a continent away from the people I was trying to find, I did put in real effort to locating them. I watched the passersby, careful making sure that each one wasn't who I was waiting for, being disappointed when they weren't. I even asked one guy if they'd seen Lincoln (Lincoln being the only one who I could remember a description of off the top of my head). He hadn't.

It's too bad that we weren't able to rendezvous during the two hour - I would've liked to meet you all, if only be proxy. Ah well. Maybe next time.

Spidere

JJason really liked the idea of a futile arbitrary rendezvous, one that could not possibly succeed. While I was sympathetic to the lure of guaranteed disaster, I suggested that perhaps we could have someone local act as his simultaneous SF proxy, to at least give a chance of success.

Lank
This was madness. Of course, when Spidere told me about the opportunity to arbitrarily rendezvous with JJason in San Francisco between 2-4pm on a Sunday, I took up the challenge. After a little BART picnic, I went home and checked JJason's Player Page, photos and tasks, to get a better idea of what he looked like and to where he might be drawn. I didn't come away with much enlightenment.

I figured that if I were meeting an SFØ player randomly in San Francisco, I'd go to places the locations of which were glaringly obvious from the SFØ website. Makes sense, right?

Lincoln and Tiny Dancer joined forces with me. I was on bike, they were in a car, so of course I was faster. This was my route:

First, I biked up to Sutro Tower. I don't recommend this. It's very high up on an evil mountain (read: HILL). Nothin'.

Then went back down toward GG Park. Called Lincoln en route - he and TD had started with Biome Gardens (home of Doorhenge, et al). No luck. As I circled the Music Concourse, I recommended we see if there's a Rendezvous cafe or restaurant in town. Lincoln found one on Market & Van Ness. Off we went.

SSI's place was on the way - only post-it notes there to indicate another FAIL. Then, no Rendezvous Cafe to be found - must've been an old listing. I set off in search of a phone booth (for the phone book inside) to double-check Rendezvous Cafe. NO PHONE BOOTHS ANYWHERE - DEAD TECHNOLOGY! On my way up Van Ness, I made a loop around City Hall, but saw no one. (If I had looked harder, I may have seen post-its!)

Now it's almost 4pm, so as a last-ditch effort, I went to Union Square. Of course, there's a concert and crowds of people. JJason would be a needle in a haystack, even if he were there. If I had had more time, I would have gone to the Ferry Building, but time was up.

piratey JJason: This was fun! I liked being JJason. He had many adventures. and his face terrified the homeless (like unto screaming and running away), and cheered small children. Also, its really hard to write legible postit rendexvous notes with your left hand whilst wearing a mask with only small eye holes and holding the postit with a hook. sorry JJason, that your handwriting was so bad.  I felt bad for deceiving the other players (they all wanted to look for JJason together, and seemed a little hurt that Spidere and I wanted to go off on our own. ) I kept hoping we would run into them while we all were out and about. Alas, no.  But i felt that the fun and scope of the task allowed for a bit of trickiness. and hey, what can i say, i is a pirate!
