Maybe it's not a story about how he and his unnamed companion(s) came to be behind a hidden door. Maybe it's a musing about the human condition. In times of strife, and pain, it's not uncommon for us to recede deep within our own psyches. We retreat from human compassion, even as we actively seek it out. We desperately want to be loved, to have someone who cares about our problems and our pains, but we do not wish to give off the appearance of desperation for fear of appearing weak.
So we vanish, pulling ourselves deeper and deeper within our own minds. We burn bridges, build walls, lock doors and windows, afraid to let anyone near for fear that even as they love us, so too will they see our frailty.
But in the darkness, we find parts of ourselves we didn't know were there; bits and pieces of our minds and hearts that resist, that won't allow us to seal ourselves off so completely. These parts reach out, crying for companionship at any cost. Irrespective of our own fears, our own embarrassments, they strain to find someone who understands us and loves us in spite of our weakness- indeed, sometimes because of our weakness.
These parts are the true measure of our identity, but we bury them, and hide them away. We balk at the thought of anyone knowing our true selves, preferring instead to put on masks and screens that conform to expectations. We never stop to consider that perhaps those expectations are unwarranted. But in hiding them, in burying them, in locking them away, we rob ourselves of the chance to run free as who we are. And, consequently, of the chance to meet someone who will love us for that. It is only once we can break down these barriers and give freedom to our hearts and minds that we are truly free to accept what is, instead of what we think others think should be.
Behind a hidden door, we find ourselves.
We find ourselves' behind, a hidden door.
Well, I would vote for the comment.
