Journey to the End of the Night: San Francisco Halloween 2011 by Shadarko

November 1st, 2011 1:10 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: The city spreads out before you. Rushing from point to point, lit by the slow strobe of fluorescent buses and dark streets. Stumbling into situations for a stranger's signature. Fleeing unknown pursuers, breathing hard, admiring the landscape and the multitude of worlds hidden in it.

For one night, drop your relations, your work and leisure activities, and all your usual motives for movement and action, and let yourself be drawn by the attractions of the chase and the encounters you find there.

How did you survive for as long as you did? Was your chasing technique irresistible? What's the story you were already telling even before it was over? Do you think that's going to heal? Tell us.

Started out the night like everyone else, human megaphoning information, which eventually turned into telephone over where we were....I never saw the elephant broccoli peanut butter, but oh well.

My group, the two of us decided to make our way south of the Bay Bridge and double back from the west up heading to the check point at the Broadway tunnel. 10 minutes into it my ribbon was missing and the next 15 minutes was spent looking for it.

Found! And we were off again. Saw a few other runners in our area but no chasers, we figured they'd all be around the closest check point which we weren't going to. Onward!

Ducked down every alley we could, up stairs down stairs, listened to the underground streams as we ran down brick forgotten streets near South Park. Saw a 8 foot tall drag queen on Mission near AsiaSF.

On to Market street, fearing being chased through the Tenderloin we rounded up to Van Ness and headed North.

Every few minutes we made a Bus Stop check to make sure we knew where the closest one was.

Saw a large amount of police and an over turned car on the way...the feeling of the end days were growing.

On broadway headed up to the check point, 2 blocks from the safe zone crossing the street a group of chasers were heading our way, double backed just in time and tried another route. Ran passed a few chasers checking their phones. Made it to Occupy Journey.

Onward to Fisherman's Wharf. Up and over Hyde, down Lombard, hearing screams in the quite night. We knew we were in the thick of it.

Luckily passed more chasers who had given up and werent looking anymore. Walked pasted two heavy in discussion on their tactics and ran across the street to a bus stop...crawling with chasers. Survived!

Had a 20 minute rest and hung out with chasers and Death (heading home with booze) and shared war stories.

Made it to the Wharf! Disco! Woooo! Saw the Chaser Killer, scariest goated headed man I've ever seen. He's not an urban legend he's for real!

Jumped across to the F Line, lousy with Chasers to tired to chase. Headed to Levi with only 15 minutes until Midnight. Were chased by a crazy man....not a chaser, but equally as scary.

Made it to the Plaza and searched for the check point, followed a haggered looking group of runners into a small park were we all made a daring leap across a rushing river, barely making it across with our lives...Sadly one person was left on the other side, never to be seen again.
Check pointed!

Midnight...3 more points to go, no time...headed home....Had a great time on the train filled with both runners and chasers sharing stories.

Found our selves at Tart to Tart in the Inner Sunset haggered but alive, survived and weary where we bought a chocolate shake.

Victory in shake form! Ready for another night.
