Ariadne Unemployed by [smedly]
October 18th, 2008 3:02 PMi found a wonderful resource for this task here: which helped me actually locate some labyrinths.
when trying to think of how to "play" in a labyrinth, i thought of two things that i play on a regular basis. 1) i play the harmonica [not exceptionally well...] and 2) i play hackey sack a lot
so that's what i did
check out the proof below for the full story plus an UNEXPECTED ENDING!

this labyrinth is located in the plaza of a church by the harbor. you can see the shadow of the cross directly in the middle of the labyrinth

I MADE IT!! walking through the whole labyrinth took longer then i expected [about 5 or 6 whole minutes] and i was pleasantly surprised at how calming and restful walking the labyrinth was.

i played [or jammed, if you will] while a bunch of kids played around outside the labyrinth.

inspired by the church in front of me, i attempted to play AMAZING GRACE. i guess it's any easy song, but i didn't have any music or practice...it kinda gets bad at the end.

and then i just jammed out for a while, playing around and having fun.

so, as my first act of play, i decided to see HOW FAST i could complete the labyrinth and make it to the center! [wearing a tuxedo jacket with tails helps me run fassst]

i sat down and played a little ditty. it was colder today so i wore a hat.

and now the UNEXPECTED ENDING!!! i found this underneath one of the benches at the Hopkins labyrinth.
IMG_8257.JPG
it was filled with prayers for loved ones in the hospital, messages of hope and inspiration, observations about the weather, contemplative statements, and comments about the labyrinth.
IMG_8254.JPG
"On a warm day I've found a little bit of happiness. you never know where you'll find your peace." "I love my life & family. It would be much better if I could retire early."
IMG_8255.JPG
"It's a beautiful day out here today and I feel so peaceful and i'm so glad I found this labrinth. I'm going to continue on my journey to happiness."

i left a record of my own sentiments. this experience turned into much more than just playing. this is exactly why i love SF0.

i see, that makes sense about being navigable by wheelchairs. the other labyrinth was at Christ Lutheran Church. there are also a few others that i wanted to get to but i didn't have time.
Praxis of the week, hands down! Brilliant and beautiful and fun, thanks.

I like your selection of ways to play in a labyrinth because they are filled with the joy of being.
well, that's what playing should be: an expression or manifestation of just bein happy just cause you're playing
The video of you running through the labyrinth made me smile, on a Monday morning, even! Thank you for that!!
The hacky sack action shots. The video of you running through the labyrinth. The surprise ending. What a great way to start my week. Thanks!
running as fast as i could through a labyrinth was MUCH more difficult than i expected. it would make for good agility training.
Great pictures, nice flow, beautifully executed task. Well done, Smedly!

The bayview one is a simpler pattern than 'standard' labyrinths because it's intended to be navigable by wheelchairs. And now I have to find another one. Well done :)
