Death Kava by SPJ

INSTRUCTIONS: Eat a food that frightens you.

This fear may strike some of you as irrational, but to me it is very real…

I am not a fussy eater. Sausages that are a couple of weeks out of date just need to be cooked a bit longer than normal (disclaimer: I am not a professional food scientist), yesterdays cold cup of tea is a fine thirst quenching beverage, I will eat random meat products that are lying around in friends kitchens (which you might find scary if you saw the kitchen in question), and so forth.

But I do have a fear. I fear Jelly.

Jelly

And Cream. And Blancmanges, Whips and other such puddings.

Cream

I think this fear dates back to one of the earliest school memories I have. It is lunchtime at primary school, and the dessert is orange jelly. I discover I really don’t like jelly by being very sick.

I wasn’t sure whether this really qualified as really fearful, but as I was contemplating this during my walk to work one morning I was able to make myself gag just by even thinking about eating Jelly & Cream. I realised I really was now afraid of completing this.

A lunchtime supermarket trip produced the following: 1 pack of Blackcurrant Jelly, 1 Can of Cream & 1 Banana (I also really dislike Bananas).

That evening I made up the jelly.

It wasn’t set by bedtime, so I had a tasty breakfast to look forward to. Yummy.

Here it is:

Time to eat

While taking this photo I got a little cream on the back of my spoon. I put it in my mouth and gently licked a little cream… I gagged once, then again. My eyes watered slightly… Now I really didn’t want to eat this.

Perhaps I should start with some banana.

Slice of Banana

Well the Banana was pretty disgusting, but I managed to resist the urge to spit it out, and chewed a little and swallowed.

Then; Jelly & Cream.

Jelly & Cream

This was worse. As soon as it was in my mouth, I just wanted to retch. I chewed slightly, and then forced myself to swallow it.

Having eaten some Jelly & Cream with Bananas, I couldn’t face eating any more. The rest ended up in the bin.

Leftovers

To recover from my terrifying ordeal I had some Toast & Marmelade.

Toast & Marmelade

I can honestly say that was one of the worst experiences of my recent memory. Never again

I can definitely understand the jelly and cream fear. I could never understand at kids parties why jelly and ice cream was so popular. Separately fine, but never together.

I feel less fussy though, knowing someone doesn't like bananas, or jelly, or cream.

Although you mentioned randowm meat products in certain persons kitchens. YUCK!

Hmm... I find that quite delicious. It amazes me how palettes can differ so extermely from person to person.

Well, I'd certainly rather eat jelly/o with bananas and cream than Fiona's duck tongues.

While I may be a fan of gelatin-based deserts, with cream and bananas or without, I can certainly see why one might find it distasteful:

It always amazes me how many people are not aware of this.

Kudos

My respects to you, sir, for your bravery. Eating something horrible is... well, horrible.

I don't like bananas either.
