Tasks / Necropolis

This task is retired.

The dead are always with us, and the geography of the dead is still part of the geography of the city.

Explore a graveyard which catches your fancy, and spend the night there.

Been meaning to do this for a while.

Huh. In theory I have no problem with the idea of going out and doing this task. It fills me with no dread whatsoever.

...and yet, despite not believing in the superstition behind it or even knowing what said superstition is, I typically hold my breath when driving past graveyards. So you'd think I'd have some sort of irrational reticence to do this.

You'd be surprised how much existential dread 3AM on a windy night can create. Graveyards still aren't as bad as GOLF COURSES though - nothing is quite as scary as a golf course to walk through in the dark... Even forests pale by comparison.

There is only one cemetery remaining in San Francisco proper. I'd love to lvl0 this there, but it would be incredibly difficult.

What? What do they do with the dead then? Mausoleums and gardens of remembrance would be OK too... I was vaguely intending on doing this in Japan, and there are no "graves" as such there (but some SUPER spooky graveyards).

Hey, that's right, you guys have that cemetery out of town don't you?

Japan? Wow, I've heard tell that Japanese spooks can get real mean.

So I understand... Except for the fella shaped like an umbrella - he's just weird...

Never actually saw any, and I've slept in the suicide forest around Mt Fuji (500 plus suicides a year, they send corpse dogs through every 6 months to cart the bodies away), used to have to cut through one filled with wind, bamboo and crows to get home, and ate my lunch in one every day for about a year. No Spooks. The infra red sensors hooked to 100 decibel sirens were a shock though...

Just outside of San Francisco, we've got a town called Colma. Check it out.

And it's actually illegal to bury or burn anybody within San Francisco city limits.

Actually, there are three cemeteries in SF I can think of. One, the SF National Cemetery in the Presidio, which I assume is the one you're thinking of. Two, the Pet Cemetery (under Doyle Drive, pretty much). And three, the cemetery at Mission Dolores. There are also many, many places that used to be cemeteries, and when the city expanded, they were dug up and moved, often to Colma. I can also think of the Columbarium, over by USF. And sanfranciscocemeteries.com/ has a lot more to add.

Approve approve approve! I wouldn't do it alone, but I would definitely do it!
Anyone who happens to see this: Doug Dorst's Alive in Necropolis is pretty good. Read it, maybe?
