Tasks / Open Source Player Finder

This task is retired.

Develop a protocol and device(s) that can be used to identify fellow players in your immediate area. There could (potentially) be two devices - a player "identifier", which would (perhaps) emit a beacon identifying someone as a player (at your discretion, it may also identify the player by username and/or group); and a player "finder", along the lines of those WiFi Finders. Any player "identifier" must cost less than $10 to build. Any player "finder" must cost less than $30 (or $50 with LCD, or $200 if the player finder does not require players to do anything to identify themselves). Plans for the device must, of course, be made public. In the interest of encouraging as many players as possible to identify themselves as such, you should consider options that would leverage equipment that many players might already have/use - such as bluetooth devices, mp3 players, shoelaces, wristwatches, jackets, etc. Under no circumstances is GPS technology to be used. And no, we aren't going to help you by providing the cellphone numbers of any players who've chosen to provide it to us.

I want to do this so bad! This task is actually the reason I signed up for the game. Let's do this!
