I've retrocompleted this, and it's awesome; if approved, I'll do a cooler version.

Fun fact: many traditional English ballads share one common meter and can thus be sung to the same tunes. In fact, many of them traditionally sort of swapped tunes with one another willy-nilly before settling on their modern versions.

Further fun fact: there sure are a lot of hymns written with the same meter, including "Amazing Grace."

...did I mention another song which shares said meter is the theme from Gilligan's Island?

In a fit of originality, this is called Common Meter.

In modern times, it has been recognized as yet another way to reduce the space complexity of songs.

Yup. The "Gilligan's Island" one is not unique to me, but I once made a point of combing through Child to get an estimate of how many of the ballads in there actually fit. Answer: I'd say a bit less than half.
