Oh dear. This one can get you arrested.

yes, indeed it can. the nice thing is that if anyone is concerned about the ethical implications, you are pretty much walking in and walking out with the same thing, so you aren't really hurting anyway. Try explaining that to the police though.

On what charges could you get arrested? Being weird?

Even though no actual thievery happened, you could be charged with theft. To the cops, and most folks behind the counter, this would look like the familiar finale of a pretty popular scam. Usually, it involves returning shoplifted goods for store credit.

You could probably beat the charge, but you'd have an interesting time pleading your case.

Ah, so, you mean you can actually return something without a receipt?
How extraordinary! (Weird country you live in, man...)

yeah it was quite a common scam. a lot of people took advantage of it at places like costco or wal-mart which used to have incredibly lax return policies.

would it still be illegal if you returned an item to the place where you had originally bought it, and then used the credit to buy the very same item back again? if I were to do that, might I still have completed the task?

i don't know about the legality of what you're asking, but the instructions say to return the item to a store that you didn't purchase the item from, so i'd just stick to finding a different store

So let me fill you all in on the details. Back on February 11th I had a report due on a play that we had to read for my Acting class. I remembered February 10th and we were in Pleasant Hill, so I purchased a copy of David Mamet's Oleanna at Barnes an...
