I am proud to announce the Grand Opening of the new Public Library Zero.

Please let me know if you have material to contribute - still plenty of room on the shelves.

Awesome idea, Dax!!! Thank you!

These are great articles... so much for the studying I was supposed to be doing!

posted by teucer on May 13th, 2008 8:26 PM

This is really cool, thanks!

And while I haven't got a copy of it in digital form that you could post here legally, might I suggest The Crying of Lot 49 - to which a number of tasks have referred?

Also: the Sweet Cheat Gone link points to a pdf with a typo that turns the title into The Sweat Cheat Gone. The link that works involves correcting this.

Doktor: Interested in making a PDF of Lot 49? And thanks for the typo - it is now fixed.

posted by Darkaardvark on May 13th, 2008 8:45 PM

Can't comment as to the legality, but I found a copy of Lot 49 online here. Good book.

Darkaardvark: Excellent. Thank you. All in the interest of education, of course.

Excellent.

Does anyone have/know of an existing pdf of the book Smart Mobs, by Howard Rheingold?

posted by Dax Tran-Caffee on May 14th, 2008 7:06 PM

Some of the Guerrilla Art PDFs weren't opening. If you have trouble with one, let me know.

Anyone doesn't have/know of an existing pdf of the book Smart Mobs. mkII Robot liked hi-tech flesh. I'm afraid of soft tapeworms. What are you afraid of?

Very glad to see the library staff making additions!

We need to add Cory Doctorow's "Little Brother" to this expanding list.

Not a bad idea, Someone.

Downloads of the full book can be found here.

Guess what I'm spending the night reading?

Hint: It's that one you just said!

There's some interesting information here about The Arcades Project, which is Walter Benjamin's modernist study in flânerie, or the art of 'strolling' through a city to better explore and experience it.

Though unfinished at the time of his death, Benjamin's manuscripts for The Arcades Project were eventually published and now there has been some attempt to put his work online in a hypertext format here in order to connect the concepts in The Arcades Project to the sort of internet drifting one does while surfing the web.

I thought reading up on this might be interesting for people considering doing Dérive task. Or, you know, other Frankfurt school/modernist geeks like me.

Also, I have a bunch of other materials I need to gather up that might make interesting and/or useful additions to the library... and today I might actually get on that.

The Lonely Planet Guide to Experimental Travel by Rachel Antony should be added here.

"Experimental Travel is travel with constraints, that at the same time liberates you from the limitations and expectations of classic tourism. By traveling with the constraints of ET, you conversely have more freedom."
-Joel Henry, founder of Latourex

ET has its roots in the varied practices and philosophies of modern alternative thinkers from the Surrealists to the Psychogeographers. Experiments such as traveling to a particular grid reference on a map, or simply wearing a horse's head about town are classic examples. Money is not required. But an open mind and appetite for liberation will come in handy.

The FluxusPerformanceWorkbook has been posted. Very interesting read for anyone who likes to Task.

Splendid! I dug around on Jane McGonigal's site and found a full copy of her dissertation (previous link was only the first four chapters). The PLØ link is now updated.

This writing is awesome. I've skimmed through a few of the sections, which are especially lucid dissections of ARGs (The Beast, I Like Bees). Chapter 7 is an absolutely wonderful interpretation of SFZero as a tool for appropriation and empowerment, while sections 8.1-8.3 bring up the rhetoric of the design that seeds collaboration. All you who are considering an SFZero book v.2 need to take an hour to look over Chapters 7 and 8. Dr. McGonigal has done most of the analyzing for us - and this is all from '06!

@Myrna:

I've got a copy of that. I've done a few. I got arrested. :-(

A lot there would be great for task ideas. Maybe I'll post some...

Oh, and @Dax:

I love it when Dax says "Splendid!". It usually means something very splendid will follow.

Not a book, but - ludocity.org is a pervasive game wiki, with a nice list of game rules for people who want to run things, put together by smart British people. Possible connections to the Soho Project must be forgiven.

We need a copy to the de Certeau text. Anyone have a lead, or resources to make it happen?

posted by Dax Tran-Caffee on October 5th, 2008 10:42 PM

Oh wow. Certainly post that in the Library.
