Dérive by ThreeKoi, Cylon

October 11th, 2012 6:04 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Among the various situationist methods is the dérive [literally: 'drifting'], a technique of transient passage through varied ambiances. In a dérive one or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.

One can dérive alone, but all indications are that the most fruitful numerical arrangement consists of several small groups of two or three people who have reached the same awakening of consciousness, since the cross-checking of these different groups' impressions makes it possible to arrive at objective conclusions.

Undertake a dérive, and report your objective conclusions to your fellow players.

Threekoi and I started off just outside the hotel where we were staying in Houghton, MI.
main_0929121728107050.jpg
The derive started off slowly, with us following the path of least resistance: The Sidewalk.
main_thesidewalk107051.jpg
Oh, wait! What's that? Fraternity members playing shirtless beach volleyball oh a chilly autumn afternoon? Why, yes please.
main_0929121731a107052.jpg
The photo quality isn't great because I decided to practice sneaky shooting from the hip to avoid creepiness.
A few frathouses down, the choice to stay on the sidewalk pays off in....puppies!main_0929121733a107053.jpgmain_puppiesupclose107054.jpg
At this point, we decided not to push our luck with sidewalk attractions--the sidewalk can only take you so far, after all. The foliage in the distance had caught our attention, so we decided to cut away from the sidewalk and across parking lots to the woods.
main_0929121744a107055.jpg
A failed passage to the foliage. It's surprisingly dense back there.
main_0929121745107056.jpg
Another parking lot to cut across.
main_0929121746107057.jpg
A Sunkist sign. Seriously, the derive was worth this alone. When was the last time you saw a light-up Sunkist sign? Staring up at this sign felt like childhood.main_0929121746a107058.jpg
Still not at the woods yet. The foliage is getting thicker at this point, though. This hill seemed the quickest way out of neighborhoods into the trees. So as not to break the sidewalk ban, we hiked up on the street. Also, this hill is much steeper than it looks. MUCH steeper.
main_0929121748107059.jpgmain_0929121749107060.jpgmain_0929121750107061.jpg
Paydirt! Steep hill has brought us to a playground. Of course, we were drawn directly to it.
main_playground107062.jpg
This happened.
main_0929121752107063.jpg
And this.main_0929121752a107064.jpg
And this. main_derive53640x361107102.jpg
And this.main_0929121756107065.jpgmain_0929121756b107066.jpg
Right next to the swingset, we found a mildly disguised trail into the woods. Of course we took it!main_0929121757107067.jpg
The trail continues. Of course, what the photo doesn't show is all the houses we can still see to our left. We pushed further into the woods to get away from the houses. We're done with you, street and houses. The woods are what attract us!
main_0929121759107068.jpg
This particular wooded area grows tires, apparently. The sight of buried tires arrests our attention. For the moment, they're more interesting than trees or leaves or nature.

Cylon's camera began to wilt in the lowering sun, so we traded gadgets. Screw you streets and houses, we're heading for the woods.
Came to a clearing with a rocky hill to our right.
main_clearing2107085.jpg
What do you do with a hill? You climb it.
main_animlahole107070.jpg Try to avoid the fairly large animal hole located about halfway up and peer back down.
main_topofhill107071.jpg
Another street. **shakes fist at sky**
main_derive61640x361107072.jpg
We cross the street when we see a weird tree and wander beyond it.
main_weirdtree640x36107098.jpg
This is a short trek. On the other side we emerge in yet another parking lot. This one yields unique car accessory ideas.
main_derive17361x640107099.jpgmain_derive19640x361107100.jpg
The parking lot is surrounded by more trees, so we just continue walking. This part of the woods seems to be lacking trails.
main_derive20640x361107073.jpg
In the distance we hear music. We walk towards the music, but are distracted by a strange wooden structure. We change direction, head to the wooden structure and come across another trail.
main_derive25361x640107074.jpg
Egads! It's a snowmobile ramp! We think it's a good idea to climb it, but once on top realize that was a poor decision. Getting down is treacherous.
main_derive26640x361107075.jpgmain_derive28361x640107076.jpg
We turn towards the music again. It takes us off any semblance of a path (note: the ensuing scratches on my legs take a week to heal). Judging from the wild animal waste, we are not the only creatures using this route.
main_scat107077.jpg
We near a chain-link fence and walk along it, trying to find the source of the music.
main_derive32640x361107078.jpg
Woohoo! Hole in the fence!main_derive33361x640107079.jpg
Yeah, we climbed over that.
main_derive34640x361107080.jpg
At this point we can piece together that the music is marching band music. We're fairly certain we just broke past the ticket line. We head towards the music. Nope, just climbed a random fence, no laws broken here today...at least not obvious ones.
main_derive37640x361107083.jpgThe band plays for us.

I especially like the idea of following music to find your next path

Thanks! That sort of just happened, was a pleasant surprise addition to the derive.
