Work is So Strange by Tesser
September 4th, 2010 1:39 PMLast Wednesday, I was sitting behind the counter and a man walked up to me and asked where he could find the political fiction section. Ok, not that unusual, seeing as how the people around here love Glenn Beck; the unusual part was that the man was wearing a Raider's jersey, a Speedo, and a pair of wool socks. I pointed him off to the place he'd asked about and he trotted off and returned a few minutes later, holding a book I didn't recognize and asked me the price on it. I scanned it, and nothing came up. Tried again, nothing.
In light of this slight oddity, I went to my supervisor Chris, who checked it over and told me we didn't have this book in our system. I went back to him (where he was reading the back of a copy of Overton Window), and he set it down mumbling what I'm fairly sure was "Crazy N****rs". I informed him it wasn't in our system, and he thanked me and went off back into the shelves and came back a few minutes later with another book I didn't recognize. Same thing, asked Chris, nothing. This happened 6 times.
Finally, I followed him back and found him rifling through a bag from Barnes & Noble, which he promptly pulled a random book from, and made back for the counter where my co-worker Stefanie stared at him a moment then tried to help him. I peeked into the bag, and there was a receipt from 20 minutes before he came in, listing all of the books he had brought up asking about. Stefanie turned him away, and he came back, stuck the book on a random shelf and repeated this until the bag was empty.
Never figured out why, never saw the guy again. Still finding people asking about books that we don't have in our system that I recognized from his collection.

Very odd indeed! And very interesting.
Also, welcome to the game! If you have any questions, comments, concerns or quandaries, be sure to message me. Or if you just want to talk.
Have an awesome day

Thank you. And well done. I encourage you to engage in the task this bizarre shopper seemed to be undertaking.
points for inconvenience (i worked at a bookstore, once, and know how inconvenient all that was) and for ambiguity (that really could have been an SF0 player, except maybe for the swearing. Will you meet that guy in these pages? or was he just a crazy guy with money? is there a meaningful difference between an SF0 player and a crazy guy with money? only time will tell.)
I worked in a bookshop as well. That man sounded like a nutter who was more interested in getting a pathetic bit of attention more than an SF0 member.
Congratulations. You just met a fellow sfø member put-pocketing. :D
