Antiwallet Freedom Venture by Water Dragon

July 22nd, 2006 11:23 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: For three days, carry all of the things you normally carry in a wallet or purse in a non-standard receptacle. This receptacle could be a paper bag, a burlap sack, a cup, a piece of soft food, your hand, etc. This task will not be accepted and scored if the receptacle is too standard! No pockets or prefabricated bags - nothing that can be construed as being engineered for carrying credit cards, cash, driver's license, and whatever else you have in your wallet. Extraordinary proofs will be scored accordingly - significant bonus points for baking your personal effects into a cake that you bring around and eat to access items when necessary.

I normally carry two wallets with me. The first is a sort of coin purse and the second is my wallet.

I decided to do this task using a clear plastic sandwich container. I selected this antiwallet because it was in my cupboard when I started the task, it has a snapping lid that could keep my change in properly and it was clear.

I thought that the fact that it was clear was significant since a wallet is generally solid in order to hide the contents. I felt that having a clear container would be an interesting change that would expose my money and credit cards and such for the world to see that I was carrying it.

I took this wallet with me to several different stores and the bank as evidenced by the (altered to protect my banking information) images.

The first store I went to was the UPS store to mail a package. The lady at the counter commented on the clear container and told me an interesting story about a place that she worked for four hours that tried to make her carry a clear purse so they could ensure she wasn't shoplifting. She decided that if they were that paranoid she would work elsewhere and quit after 4 hours. She was nice and I explained why I was carrying my things in the container and gave her one of my visitor cards.

The next place I used my antiwallet was at the bank. I felt kind of silly photographing in the bank but they were busy and nobody said anything to me about it. I did feel a little odd though placing the cash I withdrew into the clear container and walking out with it in hand for all to see. It made me feel vulnerable to attack since people could see my valuables.

I did find it kind of annoying that I couldn't put the container in my pocket and so it was always in one hand as I was walking around with it.

Next I took my wallet to the pet store and bought pet food. In the photo of this you can clearly see the money I withdrew at the bank. I was with my wife for this trip and the checkout girl said to her "I guess you know what to get him for his birthday!" I explained some about what the game was about and was promptly ridiculed by my wife for being so strange and getting kicks out of doing this task but I persisted. I invited her to play SF0 but she isn't having any.

The next place I took my antiwallet was to Trader Joe's to buy groceries. I had to put my antiwallet in the basket while I shopped and it got buried under a bunch of things so I had to wait for the checkout girl to empty the basket some before I could get it which made me uncomfortable. She commented on the container though so I explained a little about SF0 and the task and the bagger girl commented that it was right up the checkout girls aly. So I gave her one of my visitor cards and encouraged her to checkout the game.

The last place I took my antiwallet was to Quiznos today. I had some time to kill and I had already passed the 3 day requirement so I sat in Quiznos and started transferring things back to my real wallets. A guy commented on the container and so I explained again and we got into a nice chat about apple laptops and such. I did give him a visitor card but didn't take any photos of this interaction.

All in all it was an interesting experience despite the fact that I don't really get out much. I did try to document well though. The clear container and the fact that I couldn't stick it in a pocket were the biggest challenges and they made me ponder some the nature of a wallet. All in all I like my wallets as they are though. They work well for me. I have included a photo of them for reference.

I like how shoddy it is...it seems like it could come open at any second with the wrong kind of squeeze and it certainly couldn't have been easy to carry around.
