The Player Commodity by Saint

May 13th, 2007 9:32 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Turn another player or players into a commodity.

ADDENDUM: Outline use-value vs. exchange-value of your new player(s) commodity.

This task was very interesting, mainly because I was actually giving people a monetary value. The first thing I did was to create guidelines on how to find one's own value, this took time. I decided to score a person's life out and add a certain amount of money for things such as physical appearance, as well as their aspirations in life, and even what SF0 group they are in. I also subtracted money for things such as broken bones, it was very similar to a used car. I actually felt kinda bad writing out the scores for certain things, especially the subtractions, such as being homeless.

Here is the list to determine the player commodity:
You all should calculate your worth, and join the commodity.
leave a comment telling it.

Add up all the things that apply to you, and that is your overall value, and your sale value. Then divide that number in half, and subtract the penalties that apply to you, whatever is left over is your resale/trade value.

Everybody, figure out your value, and Rs/T Value

Alright, it's fixed, everything is in order.

I hope that there aren't anymore problems with it. Now everyone check it out, and enter your own worth.
Thanks,

OK, I seem to be $910, with a Rs/T value of $838.

However, I was a little confused about the education issue: I am in law school, and I am 2/3 done. Do I take the 50 for Masters? It only says Masters, and doesn't refer to all higher levels of education so I wasn't sure.

My resale value is only $325, though.

Good you guys, thanks for participating.
To answer your Q R.Candy, I am only in high school, so I don't really know enough about college, and higher levels of ed. like med school to accurately score that part, sorry. But I would just say that if you almost have your masters then count it.

posted by r0ck c4ndy on May 13th, 2007 3:23 PM

In that case...
I am worth $960, with a Rs/T value of $888. (Which is a totally rad value by the way!)

If I may suggest: Change the 'Masters' part to any fom of secondary degree, as that will take into account people in law school, med school, theology school (Burn Unit is that even how you say it??), and PHD programs, as well as include the international players, who have a whole different system of higher education degrees!

I'm rather under-valued, in my humble opinion, at $802 ($739 at a flea market). Ben, how'd you end up loosing so much value?

EDIT: D'oh! Never trust me to read instructions, I guess. My resale is actually $338, and my question is ridiculous.

Also: who's gonna step up and set up an exchange for us commodities? Any thoughts on exchange- and use-value in the field of player economics?

If I'm doing this right...
posted by Cthulhu Kitty on May 13th, 2007 6:22 PM

My value is 1084 (it's good to be old?) and Rs/T = 522 (It did say to divide the orginal value in half - yes? and then subtract?)

Updated!

Sean thats an exellent idea, I think that a task like that should be made in the future to continue this.
Something cool sounding like "The Marketable Player"
I may have this created
And yes Cyber K. you did it correctly :)

This could have derivative value. You should look back into ImpEx (hey Sean, I found a better abbrev than IE!) and look at Risk. Think about it.

In any case, are educational things cumulative? LIke I have gone thru high school AND have a diploma, AND college AND more than enough credits for the masters (ugh thesis. can't count that yet I suppose?) and dropped out once and returned . Do I add those each? I suppose the drop out is my only negative Rs/Tv. Sweet. (*edit: oh. the drinking and the drugs. never mind.)

Without the masters yet, I am worth $1,087 ($483 aftermarket) Four figures!

I love this completion on account of it's completely ludicrous.
Also, how about better than 20/20 vision, eh? There's degrees of penalty for degrees of blindness after all...

Yes, friends- Inky is short and single.

Ink, don't feel so down...

I'm 6' 4'' and have been forever single.
and yes Burn, they are accumulative, you may add them up.
and you would count the drop-out as well.

Overall value of 792 (consarndit! I really wanted to get to 800) and a Rs/T value of 350. I think if I had grown one more inch and gotten to 6 feet, not only would I have played in the NBA, but I also would have broken into the 800s.

Sir I protest at the lack of value placed upon a BART PA member!

Now that my protest has been duly noted, i would also like to note there is an exchange rate going on.

If i lived in the US i would be worth $668 and $309 resale.
However as i am a UK commodity i am on sale within the UK market, and as such, take on the price of the pound.

Using the price of the book "The Benefits of Price Convergence: Speculative Calculations (Policy Analyses in International Economics)" as a meter stick, gaining both price listings from amazon.com and co.uk. ($20 and £14.49) I am infact worth £483.97.
Therefore at the current exchange rate of 1.968 for GPB to USD I would be worth a cool $957.28

Of course ontop of this, in order to import me into San Francisco on the cheapest flight available right now ($746.68) I would be worth $1703.96
Though i believe using Saint's current commodity chart, i would depreciate in value by $20 for binge drinking in order to survive the long haul flight, (Also -$30 in resale for drugs as there is a stopover in amsterdam, and -$12 resale as the move to SF would mean id drop out of college.)
So all in all, my grand total would be $1683.95

HA, Sean, i totally agree with that statement! Mouse I think you have the most complex, and in-depth look at your own commodity, kudos for that. Definitely put a lot of thinking, as well as research into it.
As for Bart being worth so little, that would be because i set the commodity, and the values, and i felt that the other groups had a much closer goal to mine, that is why they were worth more. Equivalenz just got the shaft because they don't seem to respect the environment much.

I've devised a simple way to commodify one's vision, whether it be perfect or not quite. First, as in my case, you may have two different measures for two different eyes. I've got 20/13 vision in the right eye and approximately 20/45 in the left. This is due to a cataract, from birth.

Beneath zero (our 20/20 reference point), the equation y=tanh(x) or (2^x-2^-x)/(2^x+2^-x), being asymptotal, approximates 'worse vision' until 'it cain't get any worse.' Having -25 'points' off of 20/45, I'll use -25 as a value. For yrs truly, then this calculates out to a solid -5 commodity points for some measure of blindness.

On the other hand, above zero, we need a non-asymptotal equation, best described by the logarithmic curve in y=2x^(1/3). Having 20/13 vision, I can input a +7 value in my x, giving me 3.82586237, or rounded 3.83.

Now, adding 20 points for gender, (15x24.6yrs)=369 for age, (3x75")=225 for height, 4.5 for having blond hair (strawberry blond) at birth but no longer (it is brownish), 5.0 for bluest eyes, 10 and 10 for cooking and voting, though neither extremely well or consistently, 25 for fucking high school and 30 for my b.a., 15 for driving (i drive stick too, doesn't that count for something? and what about other classes of licenses?), 10 for driving biodiesel and hybrids frequently, but also 20 for having a bike, walking, and the BART and bus most often of all, 10 and 10 for siblings, one of each, 5 for happiness, 3 for general pleasantries i'm skilled at sharing, 5 for geniality, and 3 for the group.

That's 783.33.

Sale, well: 343.66.
