I left clues for my return.

The color printer wasn't working.

I left a repeating cryptical trail of information.

Overlaid with my message.

Obfuscated.

All that hard work.

The outcome, left at a lonely inconspicuous house in The Mission.

Neither Sam nor Ian's number on the screen are the numbers that I have for them. I am calling the numbers right away.

(no subject)
posted by Dax Tran-Caffee on April 29th, 2008 9:36 AM

What is listed as Sam's number just keeps ringing, no voicemail - probably not a mobile phone as the screenshot indicates.

"Ian's" number is an office... I think the receptionist said something about a job. I told her I had the wrong number.

This is where the URL takes me, but it doesn't seem right.

Thirty and four people had been wounded for return of 19h20 of this friday (18) in the accident that involved a truck, four bus and three cars in km 16 of the Highway Raposo Tavares. The stretch of the highway is urban and cuts the quarter of the Butantã, in the Zone West of São Paulo. For return of 20h, the Body of Firemen counted circa 20 victims. It has six cars of rescue in the place, beyond at least 20 ambulances of the Service of Medical Attendance of Urgency (Samu). In accordance with the City department of Health, good part of victims were helped in particular vehicles. The interior sensible track is blocked. The employee of a motel located in the same point of the road affirmed that the victims are being helped in asphalt. For return of 20h15, the accident provoked lines of four kilometers. The victims had been taken for seven hospitals: Hospital of the Clinics, Hospital University, São Paulo Hospital, Hospital of the Lapa, Regional Hospital of Osasco, Municipal Hospital of Osasco and Bandeirantes Hospital.

perhaps I misread it, and the URL is actually http://is.gd/71c

also
The term “context hacking”—like its older mimetic sibling “communication guerrilla”—refers to unconventional forms of communication and/or intervention in more conventional processes of communication. Context hacking is a specific style of political action drawing from a watchful view of the paradoxes and absurdities of power, turning these into the starting point for interventions by playing with representations and identities, with alienation and over-identification.

(no subject)
posted by Dax Tran-Caffee on April 29th, 2008 9:14 AM

Not sure what the lip dub videos on Laughing Squid have to do with it:

Digg doing "Groove is in the Heart" by Deee-Lite.

Revision 3 doing "Need You Tonight" by INXS.

Both Digg and Revision 3 are independent news sources... which could be prime venues for "Context Hacking."

That timeline doesn't make anything any clearer. Do we really need to go watch Primer? That sounds like a lot of work just to figure out what Rubin is up to.

I can't figure out what Phonescoop is. Didn't Rubin get fired from some mobile phone company this winter?

clue #2
posted by Lank on May 18th, 2008 5:01 PM

Herbie Lincman = TRUE

Doktor Harmon, Burnie Unitman = HALF ASSED

10 FAKES

(no subject)
posted by Lank on May 18th, 2008 5:45 PM

Found all four.

(no subject)
posted by Lincøln on May 18th, 2008 5:47 PM

My first thought has to do with the Herbie mob, but that seemed wrong, so I thought maybe it was a criticism of a task that 13 of us did, one which was true, two which were half assed, and 10 that were fakes, but BU, the Doktor and myself have no tasks in common.

So I'm back to thinking this clue has to do with the Herbie mob. I took an actual picture of myself posed like Herbie's photo, and BU and Harmon each took an existing player photo and doctored it to look like Mr. Hatman's. The rest (I assume there were ten others) all stole Herbie's actual animated gif and used it as their own.

Although this doesn't take into account GYØ Tom's brilliant animation. Nor Ben's copy.

But even if it's the Herbie photo mob that's being referenced, I still don't have an idea of where to go from there.

And what does Lank mean by "found all four"? Did he already solve it? If so, why hasn't he posted?

(no subject)
posted by Rubin Starset on May 18th, 2008 7:03 PM

That new clue has lots of references to the Rubin Flash mob. Perhaps the recent Herbie Hatman mob is somehow linked? It seems unlikely, but maybe. Perhaps the Probots and Susybots have something to do with this?

(no subject)
posted by Dax Tran-Caffee on May 18th, 2008 8:11 AM

We can only assume that the Robot Revolution is linked to Rubin. Who else could be so nefarious?

despite similarities, the cases are unrelated. +1

Last and final clues. +1
posted by Rubin Starset on May 20th, 2008 11:10 PM

You may only approach the Orange when it is sitting, it will not turn a blind eye if it's standing. If you are unfortunate enough to be facing the Orange when it is standing, you must shield your eyes or turn away and run, for you will turn to stone and never receive the sweetness that is at the end of the trail of clues. Keep the Orange in sight, but don't be in sight of the Orange.

The Orange will begin its journey at 12:30 PM sharp, on the 21st of May, 2008, in downtown SF. It will ponder its tangy life for a few minutes at Stevenson's 3rd Key Ring. After a bit of thinking, it may wander down and have a Chat With a Lovely Hippo, The Hippo talks about nothing but a Waterfall of Lies. The Orange may then Slide Away. Soon then it wants nothing but Reagan's Three Comforting Right Hands.

Follow you must, the Orange will continue. After its journey is over and it has finally found a conductive resting place to sit down for good, you may approach. Speak your name and the reasons for your travels, all roads will then lead to a final conclusion to the clues.

The Orange Awaits.
