Make It Work by Amoeba Man

June 28th, 2008 5:04 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Make it work.

A long while ago, I bought the Orange Box for my PC. I had heard glowing reviews of Portal, and the fact that it came with three of the Half Life games and TF2 was a nice bonus as well. However, upon firing it up, Half-Life 2 didn't work. At the time, I didn't press the matter because it was the middle of the school year and I didn't really have the time, and Portal worked fine (and it was the reason I bought the game), so I wasn't too concerned. However, all my attempts to make it work (updating my video drivers, lowering graphic textures, etc) did nothing, in fact, they seemed to worsen the issue. I left it for the longest time, not dwelling on it.

However, recently, I got it into my head to try and fix the issue. In the game's current state, after I started a new game, it would crash to the desktop. It would also set my resolution ridiculously low and not let me adjust it until I restarted my computer. This gave me cause to believe it was some problem with my video card or driver, but I couldn't be sure and didn't want to tamper with anything lest I screw more things up.

I decided that the easiest way to try and make this work was to e-mail Steam support with some screenshots of the errors. They'd be able to point me in the right direction. In the interim, I phoned my computer savvy friend, who suggested that something in the game was making my video driver reset. That supported my theory that the issue lay in my video card, but all of my drivers were up-to-date and not corrupted, and I could run other more advanced games anyways (Crysis), so I was a little stuck.

Another person had suggested it might have something to do with my sound card driver being out of date. This avenue ended up not working because there was a corruption in the sound card driver package I downloaded. I decided to focus on my initial suspicion (the video card drivers) instead.

But, suddenly, a solution! I woke up this morning to discover an e-mail from Steam support in my inbox. They suggested setting the game to launch with DirectX 7. Upon doing so, the game worked perfectly. After some texture fiddling and resolution setting, the game runs like a dream. With some help from my friends, I made Half-Life 2 work.

EDIT: Shortly after, the graphics started fouling up again, but

Vote for you wanting to play Portal.

"But there's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
And the Science gets done.
And you make a neat gun.
For the people who are still alive."

Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we're out of beta, we're releasing on time
So I'm glad I got burned
Think of all the things we learned
For the people who are still alive

=D

GLaD I got burned.....

Go hate and leave me.
I think I prefer, to stay, inside.
Maybe you'll find someone else to help you.
Maybe black MESA.
That was a joke, haha, fat chance.
Anyway, this cake is great.
It's so delicious and moist.

Relations and Praxis
Tasks, biome, SNIDE and BART PA
HC, CE, UofA and EZ
San Francisco
Freedom, potential, friends and fun
Even if it's sometimes odd
It will always be great

So even if sometimes you get flagged
Just keep on going till you get your Score bagged
And the Proof gets sent in
You get votes from your kin
In this game that we call SF0

I'm only Level two
But I've done six or seven tasks
And I'm down with Chrononautic Exxon
SNIDE is not for me
Nor is EquivalenZ or Biome
Someday I will plant that flag
Atop that big metal spire

The votes on my Praxii are sickeningly high
The points rocket up until they touch to the sky
So please don't try and flag
Till Level 8's in the bag
In this game that we call SF0

Close enough to taste
I hope I don't run out of tasks to do
Or get owned by a gang of those Rubins.
I might get a high score
That's not a joke, no really, it's not
No, really, guys stop laughing now
I was not kidding 'round

Well, so what if I never get a high score
I'll just keep getting points, there will always be more
Till I plant my flag high
On the spire in the sky
In this game that we call SF0

I had issues with TF2 crashing after getting to the initial load screen... went into the Steam folder, deleted everything except for the game files folder and steam.exe. Steam updates when you open it next. Worked like a charm, though the shortcuts on my desktop aren't accessing the icons for their games correctly- I could probably fix it if I wasn't so less..

...if anyone else on sf0 plays TF2, hunt me down. Or Steam in general.
