Puns of the Navarone by Blue Tulip, Burn Unit

May 26th, 2009 3:03 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a real world version of a pun, word play, or bad joke.

She had a dream, and held it for 15 years, the whole time they have been in love. They nursed it together, this terrific word-play-to-be-made-real. Very recently, it all came together. Rather quickly, almost impulsively (compared to all the dreaming). The ingredients: antique metal frame, flower garden, concrete, a couple of buckets, holes, stakes, some rope, and a dream.

After several hours of work, we had it.

See the pictures for the whole story. . .

frame

frame

She found this wonderful antique for under 30 bucks.

garden

garden

She started it, dug the thing out years ago. Together we picked out the flowers and tended it.

holes

holes

She dug the holes.

stake

stake

He staked out the ground, and tied the ropes, to hold it steady while we prepped the footings

concrete

concrete

Two 60# bags of concrete sounded about right, based on earlier experience with a different project. He bought them at the local hardware chain.

mixing

mixing

He poured the concrete/water mix back and forth between two buckets to mix it up quickly and thoroughly (this method works fairly well, if exhausting).

footings

footings

Poured the concrete into the holes around the legs

cleanup

cleanup

Those gray splashes needed to be wiped off of the frame to keep it pretty.

flower bed

flower bed

The result: a gorgeous flower bed.

flower bed

the flowers in this garden bloom at different times, so it's a constantly changing quilt of color.

Seen from our porch. The concrete cured after 24 hours and the ropes have since been removed.

As an owner of bedstead trellises, I approve.

One point for the pun, and four more for the beauty.

It is definitely not so great a pun, but I took the "word play" portion of the task instructions to heart. While we were propping it up, I heard the words your character never misses a connection and knew I needed to act quickly for documentation.

Hats off to any effort of actual horticulture resulting in such a wonderful pun. +5

I just thought how pretty it will look in the winter too, a snow bed.
I spend all my allowance right now, but I'll be back.
